Facebook kills off a user who isn't really dead

It's not that Facebook is trying to tell you something even though it might seem that way: Still, at least one user is puzzled by what happens when he logs into the social network, only to be greeted by a notice that his account cannot be accessed and is in a "special memorial state."

That's what happened to user Brett Millett, who shared his experience on a Q & A site under the heading, "Someone memorialized my Facebook profile but I'm still alive!":

Apparently, it?s pretty easy to memorialize someone's Facebook profile. I am greeted with the following message after entering my valid and correct username and password:

"Account Inaccessible This account is in a special memorial state. If you have any questions or concerns, please visit the Help Center for further information."

Millett, whom TODAY.com has contacted but not yet heard from, also wrote that he suspects the mishap may be due to some mischievous pals. "Apparently, you need my date of birth (which friends or friends with hacked accounts have access to) and a fake obituary (because no one at Facebook really reads them apparently)."

A frustrated Millett said that the "best part" was that he couldn't "actually contact them in any expedited way to protest. In fact, I sent an email to get a bunch of useless links that I'd already looked at."

There is help, but you have to know where to look. Here's where you would start, according to Facebook. And to report someone as having passed away, you'd need to go to this page.

?

We've asked Facebook to explain how what happened to Millett could happen, and will update this post when we hear back.

In general, when the social network gets a report that a user has passed away, the site memorializes the account, restricting profile and search privacy to friends only. It also leaves the profile up so that friends and family members can leave remembrance posts.

For an account to be memorialized, the person reporting the death has to provide proof of it, such as an obituary or news article, as part of the reporting form Facebook requests.

Longtime San Jose State sports information director Lawrence Fan getting Hall of Fame recognition

The list of San Jose State Spartans in national halls of fame, which includes Bill Walsh, Peter Ueberroth and Juli Inkster, is about to add another name.

Longtime staff member Lawrence Fan will be inducted into the College Sports Information Directors Hall of Fame on Monday in St. Louis, along with six colleagues from a slice of college athletics that employs thousands of people across the nation.

Fan also will receive the Arch Ward Award -- the highest honor in his profession -- for outstanding contributions to his field.

"It's a big deal for my parents," said Fan, 57, the first Chinese-American to be inducted into the sports information Hall of Fame. "It's also big for San Jose State. It gives the school another level of repute."

Officially, Fan has been the liaison between SJSU sports and the media for 32 years, arranging interviews and providing an endless array of information about Spartans sports.

"No one in our industry is more respected than Lawrence," said Jim Young, Stanford's senior assistant athletic director for communications, who has known Fan for decades.

"A lot of people in our profession are known for their glossy publications and the voluminous notes and the number of 'likes' on Facebook. But Lawrence has always been about connecting with people, and he does that better than anyone."

Unofficially, Fan fills a far more significant role in his cramped office in the athletic department. To a greater

extent than any athlete or coach to pass through SJSU in the past quarter century, Fan is Spartans athletics.

"If San Jose State had a pyramid of success, Lawrence would be one of the major building blocks," said former basketball coach Stan Morrison, who led SJSU to the 1996 NCAA tournament and had dinner with Fan on Sundays at Grande Pizzeria near campus.

Fan has seen every Spartans football game since 1980 and possesses encyclopedic knowledge of SJSU athletics. He has a story for any occasion and knows everyone from John Elway to Bill Hancock, the executive director of the Bowl Championship Series, who called Fan "the consummate professional."

"His dry wit and attention to detail have earned many friends for San Jose State through the years," Hancock added.

Fan is tireless, methodical and a tad eccentric. He loves "Leave It to Beaver" and roller derby and drove a 1978 Ford Granada until it had 412,000 miles. He replaced it with a 2000 Oldsmobile, which has 234,000 miles (and counting).

Fan is well known in college basketball circles for baking a cake for SJSU officials and media members before home games. Dubbed "Fan cake," its ingredients have never been disclosed.

In order to manage his massive workload -- SJSU's media relations department has fewer resources than Stanford and Cal -- Fan has been known to sleep in his office.

Or his car.

"That's a bit of an exaggeration," he said. "I haven't done that more than five times."

The oldest of three children, Fan grew up in San Francisco with a love for the Giants and 49ers. He attended Y.A. Tittle's final game at Kezar Stadium and was in the crowd for the infamous wrong-way run by the Minnesota Vikings' Jim Marshall.

After graduating from Lowell High, Fan enrolled at Cal with plans to be a math major. But he was drawn to athletic administration and eventually became the sports information director at La Salle University, in Philadelphia, in 1978.

Two years later, Fan accepted the same post at San Jose State, crammed his belongings into the Ford Granada, and made the cross-country trek.

In the three decades since, Fan has produced tens of thousands of pages of media guides, news releases, game notes and statistics. He also has been a friend and adviser to many Spartans athletes and coaches.

"If you have a bad game, he always has a good word to lift you up," said third-year football coach Mike MacIntyre, who videotaped a testimonial about Fan that will be shown at the Hall of Fame induction.

Along the way, Fan has established relationships with media members in the Bay Area and throughout the country.

"He's a nice guy even when he's not selling you something," said KRON sports anchor and KNBR host Gary Radnich, who refers to Fan as "The Great Lawrence Fan" on his radio show.

"He called my 90-year-old mother just to say he enjoyed being on my show."

LAWRENCE FAN
Age: 57.
Parents: His father, See D. Fan, came to the United States from China at age 12; his mother, Hang Fa, was born in Hawaii.
Education: Undergraduate degree from Cal (economics); master's degree from Western Illinois (athletic administration).
Career: Worked in sports information at Frostburg (Md.) State, La Salle University and, since 1980, San Jose State.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest

A man accused of being a cocaine trafficker and the son of Mexico's most wanted drug lord Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman is an automobile dealer swept up in a case of mistaken identity, Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday.

Mexican marines seized the suspect on Thursday outside Guadalajara and flew him to Mexico City, where they paraded him in front of the media and identified him as Jesus Alfredo Guzman, alias "El Gordo" or "The Fat One."

They said they found him with an arsenal of rifles, pistols and grenades and about $160,000 in cash.

But lawyer Veronica Guerrero told a news conference that her client's real name is Felix Beltran and that he is an innocent car dealer.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed later that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker, Telemundo reported.

"This is a case of total confusion over people," said Guerrero, who was accompanied by a woman who said she is the suspect's mother.

Mexico's attorney general's office confirmed late Friday that several identity tests reveal the man was indeed Leon and not the drug trafficker.

Thursday's arrest won praise from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which has sought Jesus Alfredo Guzman since he was indicted for cocaine trafficking in 2009.

His father, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, faces dozens of charges of racketeering and drug smuggling in U.S. courts. There is a $5 million reward for his capture.

The arrest came just over a week before Mexicans vote for a leader to replace President Felipe Calderon.

Brutal clashes between drug cartels and Mexican authorities have killed more than 55,000 people since Calderon launched a crackdown on the gangs in late 2006.

The candidate of Calderon's National Action Party, Josefina Vazquez Mota, is in third place, partly because of public dissatisfaction over the drug war.

On Thursday Vazquez Mota congratulated the marines on the arrest.

Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, has a double-digit lead in most polls.

Tiny Urban Kitchen: Il Convivio

Il Convivio
This is the third post in the?Spontaneous Weekend Trip to Rome Series. Other posts in this series include:?Dal Paino Pizzeria in Rome?and Etabli.

There's one good general rule of thumb when traveling in Rome. Try to avoid eating right inside the busiest and most popular squares. More often than not, those restaurants are touristy, packed with foreigners, and serve mediocre food.

Instead, walk a few blocks away from the bustling squares. Some of the best restaurants are hidden in random alleyways just off the beaten path.
Untitled
Il Convivio was the only Michelin starred restaurant we visited in Rome (one star). Italian food is Bryan's favorite cuisine, and he wanted to make sure we ate Italian food every single meal. Some of the fancier restaurants in the city seemed to be more French-like, so we shied away from those.

Similar to most of the good restaurants we tried on this trip, Il Convivio is a few blocks away from Piazza Navona. After walking a several blocks away from Piazza Navona, walk along the right side of this narrow, pink building (pictured above), and then turn into a (seemingly) desolate alley. When in foreign countries, a combination of downloaded maps and the free GPS feature on your smartphone is your friend.
Il Convivio
At the end of the lonely street, you stumble upon this lovely little oasis.

People eat really late in Rome. Even though our hotel concierge had told us we had a reservation for 7:30PM, we later learned that the restaurant did not even open until 8PM. We walked around for another 30 minutes before returning to sit down in this warm, cozy space.
Bryan at Il Convivio
The menu is physically huge, though it has a reasonable number of offerings. You can either get the 7-course tasting (which, when compared to the rest of the menu, is a good value at 110 Euros), or order a la carte. Frankly, ordering a la carte is more expensive, although you do get a wider variety of choices.

The dishes on the tasting menu did not appeal to us that day, so we decided to order fewer dishes (aka, not seven courses!) a la carte. We soon realized that our three-course dinner was really going to becoming like a 10-course meal after you include all the little "free" bites that popped up throughout the meal.

We enjoyed a fantastic wine with this meal,?an Italian "pinot nero" called Blauburgunder Riserva 2009.
Amuse Bouche at Il Convivio
Soon after we ordered, the server took our breath away by setting down this gorgeous tray of amuse bouches. Hardly little bites, these beautiful creations were more like full-on appetizers to whet the palate.

On the top tier, huge deep-fried olives came served alongside a creamy sauce.?

On the bottom tier, we tried light, airy bread topped with homemade butter and fish roe; braised snails ("escargot"); and savory?Parmesan ice cream served in a crunchy cracker cup topped with?Parmesan tuile and pine nuts. All three were delicious, though I thought the Parmesan ice cream was the most interesting.
Bread from Il Convivio
Bread service was exquisite, and came with semolina, spelt, whole wheat, milk bread, and focaccia. I've always loved those stick-like crackers that they serve at Italian restaurants (yes, even the pre-packaged ones), so I was thrilled to try their homemade version here.
Crudo appetizer from Il convivio
I specifically told the server I wanted something that wasn't too heavy or huge as a starter. He suggested this lovely smoked amberjack, which was served alongside micro-"rocket" (arugula), baby strawberries, and homemade croutons.
Untitled
Bryan made no such request, and ended up getting what must have been one of the biggest starters on the menu. He essentially ordered the crudo special, which was really enough food for 2-3 people.

Here they are, close up!
? Untitled

From top to bottom, left to right:??tuna tartare with asparagus and carrots, raw shrimp with roasted red pepper?and sea salt, calamari with carrots and celery, amberjack with olives & roasted red pepper, amberjack with red pepper flakes and sea salt, scallop with liver sauce and herbs, raw oyster with red onion sorbet, and raw prawn with rocket and strawberries.

Primo (Pastas)
Fish roe pasta from Il Convivio
Their fresh, homemade pastas were fantastic. This creative dish had a combination fresh fish roe and dried fish roe tossed with spaghetti. The pasta had fantastic texture (nice and chewy), and the two types of fish eggs gave the dish a deep, rich, almost aged flavor.
Linguini with porcini and black truffles from Il Convivio
We also had fettuccine with Porcini mushrooms and shaved black truffles, which was lighter yet beautifully fragrant with the rich aromas from all the mushrooms.

Secondi (Entrees)
Deep Fried Red Mullet from Il Convivio
I ordered the deep fried red mullet as my entree. If you're squeamish about seeing a whole fish, you may not want to order this dish. It's an entire fish (gutted) deep fried with the bone (yes, you can eat the crispy bones!). It had a pretty strong, "fishy" taste, which I did not love. Bryan thought it was good (but then he generally is able to enjoy stronger flavors ?- e.g., blue cheese, liver, and the like - much more than I can).
Untitled
We both agreed that it tasted fantastic with the cilantro-chili sauce with which it was served. On the side there were traditional Roman accompaniments, such as grilled artichoke and potatoes, which were pretty ordinary.
Seafood Stew
Bryan got the gorgeous seafood stew, which had a mix of squid, shellfish, and fish in a really bright flavorful tomato based broth. This dish was executed well, with beautifully rich flavors waiting to be soaked up by many pieces of bread (as well as the croutons already in the dish!).

Time for Sweets
Parmesan Ice Cream, Salumi, Candied Rosemary
As a "pre-dessert", we enjoyed an unusual smoked tea ice cream served with pizza bianco (white pizza)?, salumi, and candied rosemary.Cheesecake desserts from Il Convivio
Finally, for dessert we had a nice trio of cheesecake-themed sweets: classic cheesecake with raspberries, cheesecake foam "millefeuille", and??cheesecake ice cream with black cookie crumble. Though they were all pleasant, I think I'll still take a traditional Italian cannoli over these any day.
Untitled
But it wasn't over yet! They brought over a beautiful assortment of mignardises (or petit fours?) for us to finish off the meal. From top left to right: double chocolate cake, rum gelee, raspberry tart with blueberry, lemon macaron with mint, cannoli with pistachio, and a chocolate-filled macaron. These were all pleasant, though none blew me away [I was also woefully full by this point].

Coffee
Coffee is already fantastic in Rome. Imagine how much better it is when you order their deluxe version! We tried an espresso from?Brasile Santos Dulce, one of their deluxe choices (at a hefty 5 Euros a shot!). Despite the high price, the flavor was gorgeously intense, chocolately, smooth, and all around a pleasure to drink.

I had initially chosen not to order an espresso. After taking one sip of Bryan's, I totally decided I wanted a cup too. Bryan ended up ordering a second cup once I decided I wanted one!
Untitled

Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Il Convivio a lot. The ambiance is really warm and inviting, and the service is excellent. Dress up when you go (most men were wearing sports coats or suits with ties) - you'll feel out of place in jeans. It's definitely a date or celebration type restaurant.

The food is excellent and the kitchen definitely executes some creative dishes using high quality ingredients. Ironically, my favorite dishes were probably the "surprise" ones, such as the Parmesan ice cream or smoked tea ice cream. (OK, maybe I just really like ice cream!) I did really enjoy the pasta dishes, which were?among the best we had in Rome. If I had to skip one, I would actually probably skip on the "Secondi" (main entree) part of the meal. Though delicious, they weren't nearly as creative as the rest of the meal.

Even if you don't order dessert, at least try one of their deluxe coffees to enjoy with your mignardises.
Untitled
Piazza Navona

And do still visit Piazza Navona. It is a gorgeous square vibrantly full of energy and life. It's a great place to enjoy a dessert, relax, and just people-watch. It's unquestionably a must-visit and we returned numerous times during our trip. Just make sure to head away from the main square when it's time for dinner.?

There are just too many other?excellent options nearby.

(AP) ? The music-subscription company Spotify is joining Pandora, Slacker and Songza in offering a free radio service for mobile devices in the U.S.

Until now, the company charged people $10 per month to use its mobile app.

The free service, which comes with audio ads, is a way for Spotify to entice people to sign up for a paid subscription, which strips out the ads and enables users to choose songs.

The new feature is available only on iPhones and iPads for now; the app for other devices require paid subscriptions.

Non-payers will be able to listen to genres of music based on similarities to an artist, album, song or playlist they've created within Spotify. They will also be able to give songs a "thumbs up" for playback on computers later on.

Spotify began offering the radio service on computers in December and discovered that people wanted to use it on mobile devices, too.

"We found those that use radio are really some of the most highly engaged users of Spotify," said Charlie Hellman, Spotify's vice president of product. "They stay longer and are more likely to upgrade."

So far, Spotify has about 3 million paying subscribers globally, and 10 million people have used it in the past 30 days. The Swedish company operates in 15 countries and began offering service in the U.S. last July.

Spotify also offers a $5-per-month service that cuts out the ads on computers only. Customers who already pay will have the mobile radio service free of ads. They'll need the $10-a-month plan to choose songs on mobile devices.

Toshiba Excite 7.7 review

Toshiba Excite 7.7 review

In its sophomore attempt at cranking out Android tablets, Toshiba has unleashed the Excite series, a trifecta of thin tablet terror, upon Terran territory. The tiniest of the Thrive-topping trio is the Tegra 3-toting Excite 7.7, a close competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. It's portable, sports a gorgeous AMOLED display and packs plenty of processing power. Unfortunately for consumers, there aren't too many tablets this small with this nice a display, which means it'll be much easier for Toshiba to be noticed.

Coming to the US on June 24th, the WiFi-only version of the 7.7 -- also known as the AT270 -- will be available for $500 with 16GB and $580 for 32GB. It's not the most flattering price tag, but the Tegra 3 and brilliant display help ease the pain your wallet may experience. But is it worth it? You know what to do: head on past the break for our detailed review.

Up close with Microsoft 'Surface' tablets for Windows 8

17 hrs.

Microsoft announced a brand new line of internally-designed tablets at an event in Hollywood on Monday. The Surface tablets, as they are calling them, are extremely thin and light, and were designed with Windows 8 in mind.?

There are plain (RT) and pro versions, but both have 10.6-inch 16:9 screens and built-in kickstands, the better with which to watch movies and TV shows. The screen cover detaches and works as a full-on keyboard and multitouch?trackpad; there's a second cover that has an actual mechanical keyboard and clicking buttons.

The rear, with folding kickstand, can be seen below. The designer emphasized the high quality of the materials and parts, comparing opening the kickstand to opening the door of a high-end car.

Above, the Typecase, which has an actual tactile keyboard, compared with the Touchcase (below, in pink), which is flat and pressure sensitive..

The case is the first of its kind, they say: made of magnesium, which is often used to form the rigid bodies of professional cameras, but Microsoft has a new process for molding it that they call VaporMg. The RT version is 9.3mm (0.37 inches) thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds.

The Pro version is thicker, but it also has a more high-resolution screen (1920x1080), a more powerful Intel processor, and built-in support for pen input. It tips the scales at 2 pounds and is just over half an inch thick.

They're also fitted out with ports for the usual things: microSD, USB, video out. There are cameras on the front and rear for pictures and video, and the one on the front is actually angled a bit so you can talk while the tablet is leaning on its kickstand. Inside, you can get up to 64GB of storage on the RT and 128GB on the Pro.

More info and pictures can be found at the new Surface site; price wasn't announced specifically, but was described at the event as competitive with ultrabooks. The RT tablets will be available when Windows 8 launches (supposedly in October), and the Pro tablets three months later.

Video: Research team finds knowledge of fractions and long division predicts long-term math success

Video: Research team finds knowledge of fractions and long division predicts long-term math success

Monday, June 18, 2012

From factory workers to Wall Street bankers, a reasonable proficiency in math is a crucial requirement for most well-paying jobs in a modern economy. Yet, over the past 30 years, mathematics achievement of U.S. high school students has remained stagnant ? and significantly behind many other countries, including China, Japan, Finland, the Netherlands and Canada.

A research team led by Carnegie Mellon University's Robert Siegler has identified a major source of the gap ? U. S. students' inadequate knowledge of fractions and division. Although fractions and division are taught in elementary school, even many college students have poor knowledge of them. The research team found that fifth graders' understanding of fractions and division predicted high school students' knowledge of algebra and overall math achievement, even after statistically controlling for parents' education and income and for the children's own age, gender, I.Q., reading comprehension, working memory, and knowledge of whole number addition, subtraction and multiplication. Published in Psychological Science, the findings demonstrate an immediate need to improve teaching and learning of fractions and division.

"We suspected that early knowledge in these areas was absolutely crucial to later learning of more advanced mathematics, but did not have any evidence until now," said Siegler, the Teresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon. "The clear message is that we need to improve instruction in long division and fractions, which will require helping teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts that underlie these mathematical operations. At present, many teachers lack this understanding. Because mastery of fractions, ratios and proportions is necessary in a high percentage of contemporary occupations, we need to start making these improvements now."

The research, supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences and by the National Science Foundation's Developmental and Learning Science Group at the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Directorate, was conducted by a team of eight investigators: Siegler; U.C. Irvine's Greg J. Duncan; the University of Michigan's Pamela E. Davis-Kean, Maria Ines Susperreguy and Meichu Chen; the University of London's Kathryn Duckworth; the University of Chicago's Amy Claessens; and Vanderbilt University's Mimi Engel.

For the study, the team examined two nationally representative data sets, one from the U.S. and one from the United Kingdom. The U.S. set included 599 children who were tested in 1997 as 10-12 year-olds and again in 2002 as 15-17-year-olds. The set from the U.K. included 3,677 children who were tested in 1980 as 10-year-olds and in 1986 as 16-year-olds. The importance of fractions and division for long-term mathematics learning was evident in both data sets, despite the data being collected in two different countries almost 20 years apart.

"This research is a good demonstration of what collaborations between psychologists, economists, public policy analysts and education scientists can create," said Davis-Kean, associate professor of psychology at Michigan. "Instead of relying on results from a single study, this study replicates findings across two national data sets in two different countries, which strengthens our confidence in the results."

Rob Ochsendorf, program officer for special education research at the U.S. Department of Education's Institute for Special Education Research added, "This study is critical for providing empirical and general confirmation of the crucial role of division and fractions proficiency for long-term success in mathematics for all students. The results provide important cues to educators and researchers regarding the skills that are ripe for intervention in order to improve overall mathematics achievement in the U.S."

Radiohead Pay Tribute To Drum Tech Killed In Stage Collapse

Band's drummer, Philip Selway, says group is 'shattered' by death of friend Scott Johnson.

A day after a stage collapse
killed one person an injured three more, Radiohead issued a statement about the accident that caused the cancellation of their show at Toronto's Downsview Park.

The victim has been identified as the band's drum tech, Scott Johnson, 33, a native of Doncaster, England. According to the Toronto Star, Johnson sustained a "crushing injury" when the stage collapsed while he and other members of the band's crew were setting up for the show. The other three crew members were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Radiohead drummer Philip Selway issued a statement on Sunday paying tribute to Johnson. " We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague," he wrote. "He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

The Star reported that three inspectors and two engineers from the Ministry of Labour scoured the accident scene on Sunday in search of the cause of the collapse. The incident is the latest in a string of stage collapses over the past year, which include a death at the Bluesfest in Ottawa last July, six deaths at a Sugarland concert

in Indianapolis in August and five deaths in Belgium
after a storm swept in and toppled a stage at the Pukkelpop Festival.

A spokesperson said the investigation is "fairly complex," and some industry professionals wonder what could have caused the incident, which occurred on an otherwise nice, sunny day with light winds.
