Nokia imaging head Damien Dinning makes 'personal decision' to leave the company

Nokia's cameras and imaging systems have garnered the company plenty of attention in recent years, but it looks like it's now facing something of a turning point in that area. As Amateur Photographer reports, the man responsible for leading that charge, Damian Dinning, has announced that he's leaving the company effective November 30th. According to a statement released by Nokia UK, that move is a "personal decision" Dinning made following the company's decision to relocate a number of key strategic roles to Finland. As for what's next for Dinning, he rather cryptically tweeted just two days ago that he's "incredibly excited about the 10th Dec," adding that he "can't say more than that right now other than to say it's nothing to do with Nokia directly." There's also no word yet from Nokia on who will take over his role.

China Eastern seals $5.4 billion deal to buy 60 A320s

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China Eastern Airlines , one of the country's top three carriers, has agreed to buy 60 Airbus A320 aircraft for about $5.4 billion, expected to be delivered in stages from 2014 to 2017.

This is the first major deal involving Europe's Airbus and a Chinese airliner after the European Union agreed on November 12 to "stop the clock" for a year on plans to force non-EU airlines to adopt its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

The new aircraft will help the airline satisfy rising demand for domestic medium- and short-haul passenger routes, China Eastern said on Friday. The deal is subject to approval by the airline's shareholders and mainland regulators.

In a filing to the Hong Kong Exchange after markets closed, China Eastern said it planned to fund the purchase from its working capital, commercial bank loans and other sources it didn't specify.

While this may increase its debt-to-equity ratio, the airline said it did not expect the deal to have a substantial impact on its cashflow position or its business operation.

China Eastern said it had also entered a disposal agreement with Airbus for eight of its Canadair Regional Jets and 10 Embraer Regional Jets that have a combined book value of 1.5 billion yuan ($240 million).

These 18 aircraft are expected to be delivered to Airbus in stages from 2014 to 2016. China Eastern said it received these aircrafts between 2000 and 2007, which now have an average usage of about 8.2 years.

Airbus' Paris-listed shares was down 1.8 percent at 1120 GMT, having pared losses on the day. Shares of China Eastern Airlines rose 1.8 percent in Hong Kong and 0.3 percent in Shanghai on Friday.

Blind patient reads words stimulated directly onto retina: Neuroprosthetic device uses implant to project visual braille

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? For the very first time researchers have streamed braille patterns directly into a blind patient's retina, allowing him to read four-letter words accurately and quickly with an ocular neuroprosthetic device. The device, the Argus II, has been implanted in over 50 patients, many of who can now see color, movement and objects. It uses a small camera mounted on a pair of glasses, a portable processor to translate the signal from the camera into electrical stimulation, and a microchip with electrodes implanted directly on the retina.

The study was authored by researchers at Second Sight, the company who developed the device, and has been published in Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics on the 22nd of November.

"In this clinical test with a single blind patient, we bypassed the camera that is the usual input for the implant and directly stimulated the retina. Instead of feeling the braille on the tips of his fingers, the patient could see the patterns we projected and then read individual letters in less than a second with up to 89% accuracy," explains researcher Thomas Lauritzen, lead author of the paper.

Similar in concept to successful cochlear implants, the visual implant uses a grid of 60 electrodes -- attached to the retina -- to stimulate patterns directly onto the nerve cells. For this study, the researchers at Second Sight used a computer to stimulate six of these points on the grid to project the braille letters. A series of tests were conducted with single letters as well as words ranging in length from two letters up to four. The patient was shown each letter for half a second and had up to 80% accuracy for short words.

"There was no input except the electrode stimulation and the patient recognized the braille letters easily. This proves that the patient has good spatial resolution because he could easily distinguish between signals on different, individual electrodes." says Lauritzen.

According to Silvestro Micera at EPFL's Center for Neuroprosthetics and scientific reviewer for the article, "this study is a proof of concept that points to the importance of clinical experiments involving new neuroprosthetic devices to improve the technology and innovate adaptable solutions."

Primarily for sufferers of the genetic disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the implant Argus II has been shown to restore limited reading capability of large conventional letters and short words when used with the camera. While reading should improve with future iterations of the Argus II, the current study shows how the Argus II could be adapted to provide an alternative and potentially faster method of text reading with the addition of letter recognition software. This ability to perform image processing in software prior to sending the signal to the implant is a unique advantage of Argus II.

Mexican president wants to change his country's name ... to Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Felipe Calderon has one non-urgent item pending on his agenda in the dying days of his presidency - he wants to change his country's name.

Calderon sent a bill to Congress on Thursday to change the constitution to tweak his nation's official name from Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or United States of Mexico, to plain old Mexico - as the country is already known the world over.

Mexico was given its name of Estados Unidos Mexicanos in the 19th century, when the country's post-revolutionary founders harked to the United States of America as an example of democracy and freedom to follow.

"The name of our country no longer needs to emulate that of other nations," Calderon said. "Forgive me for the expression, but Mexico's name is Mexico."

The country's name is derived from the nomadic Mexica tribe that in 1325 settled present-day Mexico City, which later grew into the imperial Aztec capital before succumbing to Spanish conquerors two centuries later.

Calderon staked his presidency on the much larger issue of fighting the country's drug cartels, and about 60,000 people have died in drug violence during his term. The bloodshed hurt his National Action Party's candidate in a presidential election in July.

He hands Mexico's reins to president-elect Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party on December 1.?

Pixelitis Picks: The greatest launch titles of any system | Pixelitis

You don?t buy consoles just to have a shiny electronic paperweight on your home entertainment stand. You, of course, buy consoles to play videogames. We here at Pixelitis are firm believers that consoles are only worth their weight in games, and new consoles are only worth their weight in launch titles.

The Wii U made its debut a mere three days ago, and outside of the immediate casual appeal and dire-hard Nintendo fan, many gamers this Christmas season are going to buy the new console based upon its launch software. As of right now, Super Mario Bros. Wii U, Nintendo Land and ZombiU (reviews forthcoming) are at the head of the launch window pack.

While it remains to be seen if these games make the Wii U a must have, below are a few launch titles we think best defined the early impressions of our favorite systems. It?s no surprise that Mario made the list twice.

Best Launch Title: Super Mario 64

I can still remember the first time I laid eyes on?Super Mario 64?at a Toys ?R Us one September/October day in 1996. I was seven years old and delightfully making Mario interact with the pretty and polygonal front lawn of Peach?s Castle at one of the demo stations of the store. It was also the day my father purchased?Illusion of Gaia?for SNES for me. What an awesome dad.

It wasn?t until my friend got the system, however, when I realized just how special this launch title was. For whatever reason, my time with the demo (and making Mario climb trees in a colorful 3D environment) felt like a blur and while I knew that it was nice, it didn?t really hit me as to how revolutionary?Super Mario 64?was until I had that ridiculous three-pronged controller in my hands at my friend?s place.

It?s Mario.?In freaking 3D!?At the time, I had very limited time with polygon-based games aside from?Star Fox,?so this really was out of this world for me. Looking back, it?s hard to believe how I managed to survive waiting until May of 1997 to finally get one.

While?Super Mario 64?is still a nice romp to go back to every now and then, it?s hard to love it as much as I did as a second grader. One thing?s for sure though: no game console that renders 3D visuals featured a more revolutionary launch title.

Best Launch Title: Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Many a day in my youth was pretending to be a Jedi and battling the evil Empire, the Empire being my elementary school. I would win any lightsaber duel (old sticks on the playground) and out?maneuver any X-Wing (sitting in the back of my Dad?s car). Imagine my excitement when I got a Nintendo Gamecube and my Dad got?Rogue Leader?to go with it. Pure midichlorian-free bliss.

This game made me really believe that I was in the Star Wars?movies, flying down the Death Star trench and blasting womp rats in my T-16 Skyhopper. But what made it even better was that it managed to exist outside of the canonical movie scenes, and still create a plot that was believable and that didn?t feel like a cheap spin-off.

Each craft was recreated with loving detail, from ion cannons on the Y-Wing to the rotating turrets on the?Millennium?Falcon. It was a game that really showed off what the Gamecube could do, and it made it look so easy too. For a launch title, the controls seemed especially polished and?intuitive? and the premise was easy to grasp and puled you in easily. I imagine that would be hard to do when considering all the new possibilities of next-gen gaming, but?Rogue Leader?showed no signs of hesitation.

To this day, I?ve not played a?Star Wars?game that felt as genuinely authentic as this one.

Best Launch Title: Super Mario Land

When I turned six, my parents gave me a Game Boy as a birthday present, along with Super Mario Land and Pok?mon Red, two games that has forever changed my life. Even though I could go on a long tangent about all the fond memories I have with both of these games, I have to stick with the given topic and talk about Super Mario Land.

As a kid that was brought up on Nintendo consoles and rarely getting the TV for myself until I was given my own, I often found myself playing with my Game Boy until the batteries would die, and play some more once new batteries came into the house.

Super Mario Land had me playing for hours on end as I tried and tried again, memorizing and mastering each level while progressively getting farther and farther every time until I managed to defeat the final boss.

Super Mario Land does not follow the traditional Mario formula, yet it does everything nearly the same. The enemies are different (including exploding turtles), the levels aren?t made in the same style and the music is nothing like the songs that we?re used to hearing, but are still oh so addicting. There are even some levels where you get to drive a submarine and a plane, which is something I don?t recall seeing in any other Mario game. In fact, if you would give this game to someone without telling them what it is, I but their first reaction to it would be ?Cheap Mario Knock-Off.?

But for me, it is those minor differences that make me remember the game for what it is ? my first foray into gaming on the go.

Best Launch Title:?Halo: Combat Evolved

In the pantheon of great launch titles, some of the titles my fellow staffers have chosen will definitely stand the test of time. My pick, however, both defined a console and arguably put first-person shooters on the console gamer?s map.

When Microsoft announced they were throwing their hat into the videogame console ring back in 2001, the announcement was met with skepticism from gamers at the time. In an industry where Sony was dominating with its PlayStation 2, Nintendo was doing well with its Nintendo 64 and Sega had all but collapsed under its own weight , the idea of a new challenger approaching the fray seemed just a little ridiculous.

I was one of those skeptics. That is, until I played?Halo.

As a high school freshman, I remember hearing stories of the ridiculous multiplayer matches in?Bungie?s first-person shooter. The vehicles, the guns, the crazy sessions of Capture the Flag and Team Slayer. As a fan of Sony?s PlayStation 2, I couldn?t help but be a little jealous. Nothing I saw on Sony?s hardware could compare to what I was hearing.

So when my best buddy Matt finally got an Xbox of his own later that year, I?ll never forget the first time we booted up Halo: Combat Evolved.?Right from the title screen, I knew I was in for something big. With the signature orchestral score augmented by the dulcet tones of a choir filling our ears, we dove right into the co-op campaign, running train on the Covenant hordes.

Since those days of co-op and 16-player LAN parties (remember those?!), there have been eight games in the Halo series, making it one of the biggest franchises in over a decade. It?s also widely attributed for propelling the Xbox and its successor, the Xbox 360, to ?household name? status.

If that doesn?t make?Halo: Combat Evolved one of the greatest launch titles in videogame history, then I don?t know what does.

Worker fired for gross misconduct? No COBRA ? Business ...

Employers can?t terminate em??ployees just because a sick dependent increases health insurance costs for the employer. That violates the Employee Retirement Income Secu??rity Act (ERISA). But if the employee is terminated for unrelated gross misconduct, he has no ERISA or COBRA claim. (COBRA is the law that allows terminated workers to continue participating in their former employer?s health insurance plan.)

Recent case: Michael worked for a body shop and had family health insurance coverage through his em??ployer. Michael?s child has cerebral palsy, requiring daily physical therapy and medication, both of which the health plan covered.

Michael got into a screaming match with another employee, allegedly making threatening gestures, calling her a ?fat-a** bitch? and shouting, ?Shut up, fat bitch!? The body shop?s outside HR consultant conducted an investigation, spoke with two witnesses who described the incident very similarly and concluded Michael should be terminated.

Michael sued, alleging he had been fired because his son had high medical expenses and that he never got his required COBRA insurance continuation letter.

He pointed to several comments made after his son was born that implied covering Michael?s family was costing the shop lots of money.

The body shop argued that it never tolerated the kind of behavior Michael displayed, no matter who the employee was.

The court dismissed Michael?s case, ruling he was fired for gross misconduct, not because his son was ill. (Berry, et al., v. Frank?s Auto Body, et al., No. 11-4150, 6th Cir., 2012)

Final note: The court also pointed out that the company conducted an independent in??ves??tigation before terminating Michael. Plus, it was clear that no one else had behaved as badly without being fired.

Israel?s social media war run by 26-year-old

Lieutenant Sacha Dratwa (Facebook)Social media have become tools for popular movements like the Occupy Wall Street protest and the Arab spring. But Israel may be the first country to launch a propaganda war using Facebook and Twitter.

And the lieutenant running this virtual smackdown is a 26-year-old snowboarder named Sacha Dratwa, a Belgian immigrant who leads a team of social media soldiers.

According to Tablet magazine, for the past two years Dratwa has been in charge of the Israeli Defense Forces' "YouTube and Facebook presence and turned it into the most globally visible arm of the Israeli military."

Facebook, the magazine reports, only became available to Israel around 2008-2009, and it was considered a kids' toy. (Remember those days?)

But that was then. Now, Dratwa tells Tablet, "We believe people understand the language of Facebook, the language of Twitter." His team tweeted, for example, about an Israeli girl injured by a Hamas rocket, after a photo of a baby killed by an Israeli missile was posted on Twitter. The IDF commissioned a Foursquare-style game for frequent visitors to its blog, and it posts YouTube videos of drone strikes and assassinations.

Want to know more about Dratwa? Just head over to his mostly public Facebook profile. As Gizmodo points out, the guy running the cyberwar is also just a guy, doing "guy stuff" like drinking with his buddies, hitting the slopes and "commanding a cyber propaganda squad."

4 Signs It Might Be Time to Break Up With A Friend | xoJane

image

I can never break up with TOK -- she knows way too many of my secrets, like my love for jerky sunglasss.

Once in a while, I get weirdly panicked that I?m incapable of keeping best friends.?

I?ll watch movies about childhood BFFs-turned-lovers or go to weddings where the bride?s tearful maid of honor tells a story about their preschool days, and I?ll think about all the close friends I?ve had over the years who?ve drifted away. Sure, I still get drinks with one friend from elementary school, but I suspect it?s because we?ve set a precedent for drifting in and out of each other?s lives with a vague sense of fondness and a predilection for gin. Everyone else, though, is mostly gone.

I tend to fall in friend-love fiercely and quickly, and sometimes that means that after six months of grand, throat-choking affection, we abruptly realize that we drive each other up the wall. Still, it scares me that I can look at photos of myself pressing my face against someone else?s and remember the time and place but nothing of the feeling.?

With some of these friends, distance and time were the killers. With others, though, as guilty as I may feel, it was actually better for one or both of us that we eventually split. The older I get, the more I constantly evaluate how I?m expending my mental and emotional energies ? and some relationships just aren?t worth the investment. Tragic, yes, but true.?

If you suspect that a friend break-up might be in your near future, consider asking yourself the following questions:?

1. Is Your Friend Using You as an Anecdote Machine?

When I?m nervous or surrounded by strangers, I?ll occasionally slip into a mouthy, aggressive persona that knows how to work a room while simultaneously desperately wishing to be home with a book. If you ask me about my love life when I'm in this mode, for example, ?I'll inevitably respond with a story about a houseboat orgy rather than the far more realistic, ?Last weekend I passed out on my date?s stomach after a glass of mulled wine and 15 minutes of ?She?s the Man.???

Usually, this charade lasts a half hour, tops -- just long enough for me to feel comfortable in my own skin. But a lot of my high school friends loved this persona.

?You?re sooo San Francisco,? they?d coo when I told them stories of drunken co-worker makeouts or live sex shows. ?I can?t believe your life!?

Conveniently, neither can I. My wacky anecdotes are all true, of course, but they?re not my entire existence. To those friends, though, that?s who I became -- and when I didn?t play that character, they?d get cranky.

?Tell us another wild SF story,? they?d plea when I tried to talk about my short-lived, intensely boring reporter side-job or my apartment dogs. ?Have you had sex in Golden Gate Park yet??

Eventually, it just started feeling too fake. These friends were enamored with a person I?d constructed as a defense mechanism, and I couldn?t maintain the illusion. Maybe if I?d been honest with them from the start it would have been easier. As it was, the next time I got an invite to one of their house parties, I respectfully declined.?

2. Are They Making You Feel Unreasonably Guilty About Your Other Friends?

This is what eventually killed one of those super-intense, inhaling-the-other?s-exhales friendships I seemed to collect in high school. I loved Bonnie like a sister, but she was one of a monogamous-friend type who poured all her energies into one person and expected them to do the same for her. We?d talk on the phone almost every night, hang out every weekend, and make so many grand declarations of love to each other that even my mom accused me at least twice of being her secret girlfriend.?

This was all well and good in high school, but when I got to college, it was impossible to maintain that level of intensity. I wanted to branch out and have adventures and try this new life on for size, and Bonnie was having none of it. Bonnie?s an amazing person, but for her our friendship was all-or-nothing: either I was her number one best friend or we were barely acquaintances. Eventually, it just got to be too much pressure.?

The way I see it, your stick-to-the-end friends should have enough security in your relationship to recognize its potential for flexibility and longevity in the face of life changes. Anyone who gives you shit because you no longer have time to call her every night is making herself into a chore instead of a pleasure. And at that point, that isn?t really friendship at all. ?

3. Are You Brainstorming a List of ?Safe? Topics Before Every Friend-Date?

When you?ve known someone for a long time, it can be tempting to believe that your shared history will be enough to fuel the relationship for the rest of your lives. And in some cases, this is totally true -- my one childhood friend and I have just enough in common that we have things to discuss when we?ve milked the ?your boyfriend/my boyfriend/remember when?? teat dry.?

With others, though, I?ve gone in to a few friend-dates optimistic and unprepared, believing that the closeness we shared five years prior will have endured where our shared interests haven?t. Instead, we sat in awkward silence for two hours, occasionally trying, ?So, how ?bout that Mitt Romney? Oh, you voted for him. I see,? followed by more silence.?

Luckily, when these things happen, both parties tend to recognize that you?re on the verge of whipping out all the photos you took of your housemate?s cat the last time it climbed in a shoebox. It?s sometimes very difficult to admit that relationships can?t usually run on remembered affection alone. But generally, it?s better to cut your losses early and preserve some semblance of that fondness rather than drag out your interactions until you?re forced to either kill each other or enact an ill-advised soul-bonding ritual.

4. Does Your Friend Keep Returning to His Self-Destructive Behavior? Is He Taking You With Him Every Time?

This one is probably the toughest decision to make, and it might deserve its own piece sometime down the road. For me, though, part of friendship involves getting carried along in my friends? dramas and indiscretions. I?m not always the best at emotionally separating my life from my loved ones?, and my friends tend to reach out for me as an anchor when they need support. Which is great by me -- most of the time.

The hard part, though, is acting as someone?s primary support system when they keep making the same bad decision over and over again. Being someone?s crutch takes work?-- it simultaneously saps your emotional energy and makes you feel wildly out of control of the situation. A therapist friend of mine once snapped at me for continuing to be present (one might say too reassuring) for another friend who kept returning to her self-destructive behaviors.?

?She needs to know that your relationship with her is possible collateral damage,? the therapist told me. ?If she knows you?ll be there for her regardless, she won?t change her behavior.?

Eventually, carrying a responsibility like that starts to wear on you, especially if it keeps repeating. You start needing your own support system; failing that, maybe you fall back on a few harmful behaviors of your own. Hence, this is one of those uncomfortable moments when choosing your own health over your friend?s might be the smartest option available if you're feeling overwhelmed.?

It doesn?t have to be what I call a ?salt-and-burn? style purge, but taking a step back from the situation can provide a lot of clarity in terms of where you?re spending your time. You can still be there for your friend, of course, but you?re also giving yourself the option of opting out, which can be amazing for your own mental and emotional health.?

What about you guys? Any other red flags for ways to tell your friendship is taking its dying breath? When do YOU decide enough is enough? Let me know.

Hamas kills suspected collaborators with Israel

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Masked gunmen publicly shot dead six suspected collaborators with Israel at a large Gaza City intersection Tuesday, witnesses said. An Associated Press reporter saw a mob surrounding five of the bloodied corpses shortly after the killing.

Some in the crowd stomped and spit on the bodies. A sixth corpse was tied to a motorcycle and dragged through the streets as people screamed, "Spy! Spy!"

The Hamas military wing, Izzedine al-Qassam, claimed responsibility in a large handwritten note attached to a nearby electricity pole. Hamas said the six were killed because they gave Israel information about fighters and rocket launching sites. Hamas did not provide any proof of the alleged collaboration.

The killing came on the seventh day of an Israeli military offensive that has killed more than 130 Palestinians, both militants and civilians, as well as five Israelis. Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes, targeting rocket-launching sites, weapons caches and homes of Hamas activists, in response to repeated Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli cities. Hundreds of Palestinian rockets have rained down on Israel in the past week.

In selecting its targets for airstrikes, Israel relies on unmanned spy planes, or drones, but also on a network of Palestinian collaborators who feed information to their handlers from Israel's domestic Shin Bet security service.

Israeli defense officials say Palestinian informers have been recruited ever since it captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast War. Some are recruited with promises of work permits or money, while others are blackmailed into collaborating.

There is broad consensus among Palestinians that informers for Israel deserve harsh punishment, and it is rare to hear someone speak out against killings of alleged collaborators. Such public killings have been carried out in the West Bank and Gaza since the first intifada ? or uprising ? against Israeli occupation in the late 1980s.

Human Rights Watch and other international rights groups have condemned such extrajudicial killings, as has the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, a Gaza City-based group. Human Rights Watch says Hamas has also tortured suspected collaborators.

Tuesday's killings took place in Gaza City's Sheik Radwan neighborhood.

Witnesses said a van stopped at the intersection, where four masked men pushed the six accused informers out of the vehicle. Salim Mahmoud, 18, said the gunmen ordered the six to lie face down in the street and then shot them dead.

Another witness, 13-year-old Mokhmen al-Gazhali, said the informers were killed one by one, as he mimicked the sound of gunfire.

They said only a few people were in the street at first ? most Gazans have been staying indoors because of the Israeli airstrikes ? but the crowd quickly grew after the killings. Eventually several hundred men pushed and shoved to get a close look at the bodies, lying in a jumble on the ground. One man spit at the corpses, another kicked the head of one of the dead men.

"They should have been killed in a more brutal fashion so others don't even think about working with the occupation (Israel)," said one of the bystanders, 24-year-old Ashraf Maher.

One body was then tied by a cable to the back of a motorcycle and dragged through the streets. A number of gunmen on motorcycles rode along as the body was pulled past a house of mourning for victims of an Israeli airstrike.

In Israel's last major Gaza offensive four years ago, 17 suspected collaborators who fled after their prisons were hit in airstrikes were later shot dead in extra-judicial killings.

During the current offensive, Tuesday's killings brought to eight the number of suspected informers being shot dead in public. On Friday, the body of one alleged informer was found in a garbage bin, and another was shot dead in the street. Hamas claimed responsibility for both killings.

Since seizing Gaza in 2007, Hamas has executed four informers by firing squad, and about a dozen more are on death row in Gaza.

During Israel's direct occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, some informers openly cooperated with Israeli forces. For example, one informer in the West Bank town of Jericho displayed a photograph of Israel's army chief at the time on the wall of his office, in a defiant display of his allegiance.

After Israel pulled back troops from parts of the West Bank, he and others were given refuge in Israel. Other informers were evacuated from Gaza after Israel withdrew in 2005, but Israel is believed to have maintained a network there.

Human rights groups have alleged, for example, that Gaza medical patients seeking treatment in Israel are sometimes approached by the Shin Bet at the crossing into Israel.

Online tools make Sandy fundraising easier

Crowdrise

Journalist Anick Jesdanun's fundraising page on Crowdwise, which is also social network for raising money.

By Anick Jesdanun, AP

Superstorm Sandy convinced me that I should do something new: raise money toward hurricane relief. If it weren't for the ease of nudging my friends and family to contribute by way of social media and online fundraising tools, I'm not sure I would have done it. I do know that I wouldn't have been as successful.

I have regularly donated in the past, particularly when people I know are raising money for cancer research, youth programs and other charities in connection with a marathon, a triathlon or some other big event. But I've never raised money myself. I didn't want to feel as if I had to run because I was trying to raise money, or that I had to raise money to guarantee a spot in a sold-out running event. I wanted to keep the two completely separate.

The storm that devastated my city and lots more up and down the East Coast changed my thinking.

The Sunday after Sandy made landfall two weeks ago, I was supposed to run my 50th marathon in New York, 10 years to the weekend since I had run my first marathon, also in New York. It would have been a celebratory affair. Then Sandy came along, and after days of intense debate, the marathon was abruptly canceled. I channeled my energies instead toward raising money for relief.

Of the several sites I could have used to organize my fundraising campaign, I chose Crowdrise because I could link my efforts with a broader campaign by the marathon's organizers to turn the event into a Race to Recover. These and other sites make it easy to choose a charity to support and send appeals to friends and family. The sites handle the credit card transactions and tax receipts, and they forward the money to the charities, after taking out processing fees.

After signing up for a free Crowdrise account, it became clear it wasn't just a fundraising site, but a social network for raising money. When you join a cause, you are grouped into a team with others. Those teams are grouped into larger campaigns ? in my case, the New York Road Runners' efforts to raise hurricane-relief money for a dozen local and national charities.

The money I raised was added to the team totals, so I could see the cumulative impact of our individual efforts. Some campaigns let you see their totals, too. A few thousand dollars might be a drop in the bucket, but the millions collectively raised by people like me made a bigger difference. I could browse the site to see what strangers supporting my cause were doing. I could also see what other causes they were raising money for, whether related to Sandy relief or not.

If you're thinking of getting involved, for Sandy relief, cancer research or any other cause, here are some tips. Many of these steps also apply if you're using other fundraising sites, such as FirstGiving and Razoo.

Razoo

Razoo is one of several sites where you can organize fundraising efforts to help those hurt by Superstorm Sandy.

Create or join a cause
To get started, I simply visited the New York Road Runners' Crowdrise page for Sandy relief. I could make a donation without signing up if that was all I wanted to do. I simply had to pick which of the dozen charities should get my funds and provide credit card information.

Because I wanted to raise money myself, I created an account and browsed through the listed charities. Some were devoted to restoring parks after the storm. Others were targeted at feeding people or rescuing animals. A few were broad relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross. I chose a local group that would disperse funds to where the needs are, The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

The process is similar for other groups and events. United Airlines and the Equinox gym, for instance, are running similar campaigns for Sandy relief. You can create your own fundraising campaign as part of a 30th birthday celebration or a bike trip across the country ? people you know would try to raise money for your selected cause, not your bike trip! There's even one connected to a college football game next weekend between archrivals USC and UCLA (in that case, for cancer research).

If I weren't already part of an event, I could have simply clicked "I'm a Fundraiser" to search for a cause and raise money as an individual. Crowdrise already has a list of more than 1 million recognized charities, using a database from GuideStar, a research organization specializing in nonprofits. It won't let me create and raise money for a Buy Me a New iPad charity. For that, I'd need Kickstarter, Indiegogo and others that emphasize fundraising for personal projects.

Send out appeals
You're given a fundraising Web page, where you can describe the need and make your plea in your own words. Too lazy? Simply keep what's already there. You can also add photos ? such as those showing the devastation left in Sandy's path.

Crowdrise has a bunch of tools for sending out appeals using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or plain old email. I ended up posting my own links on Facebook because Crowdrise's 420-character limit conflicted with my tendency to ramble. For Twitter posts, Crowdrise's tool would shorten it further to comply with Twitter's 140-character limit. Those limits do not apply to email, but a test message through Crowdrise's system ended up in Hotmail's junk folder. No, thanks.

I encouraged my friends and family to spread the word, even if they weren't able to give themselves. Many contributions came in that way, as people reposted links on Facebook or got in touch with others through email. I reconnected with a college classmate in the process and saw contributions from a friend's dad and from someone who used to babysit me as a toddler.

As my direct appeals (read: spamming) faded, I simply added a link to the bottom of my outgoing emails. It's there as a reminder, but also out of the way.

Track your progress
Donations trickled in following my various appeals. Crowdrise sent me a notification each time and recommended "dropping everything you're doing so you can send a personal thank you."

From your account, you simply hit a "Send Thank You" link next to each donor's name. There's a "Thank All Donors" list, too, if you're lazy. I preferred the personal touch. In some cases, I sent thanks through email or Facebook instead, though Crowdrise won't mark those people on your list as already thanked. (FirstGiving and Razoo send automated thank-you notices, though you may personalize those automated messages.)

I initially set a goal of raising $1,285, or $26.22 for each of the 49 marathons I had run (26.22 is the number of miles in a marathon to two decimal points). An orange bar on my fundraising page showed how close I was to the goal. I hit that in four days and increased the goal to $2,622. I returned to the site now and then to check on my progress.

Network and give
Once I hit that initial goal, I started responding to other appeals on Crowdrise. I gave to one friend's campaign for the American Red Cross and to another for a Brooklyn group that was trying to recover from the storm in time to serve Thanksgiving meals to the needy.

As I mentioned before, Crowdrise is more than a one-time transaction. It gave me the option of posting a notice about my donation to my Facebook profile, so that friends seeing it might give, too. Receipts I'd need for tax deductions are easily accessible from my account.

And on each fundraising page, including mine, is a huge button inviting donors to raise money for that cause, too.

The catch
Crowdrise tries to put the "fun" in fundraising. Getting people to part with their money isn't easy, particularly for ongoing needs that aren't revolved around a crisis continually in the news. Two weeks after the storm, many people have moved on. Contributions are slowing.

But Crowdrise does make it easier. I know that I'm more likely to give ? and give more ? when I'm supporting a friend's direct appeal. I love seeing that orange goal bar move closer to the 100 percent mark. I can only imagine that it's influencing others in a similar way.

The catch is that Crowdrise charges a fee on each transaction, at least 5 percent of the donation amount. Other fundraising sites do so as well, and when you're giving directly to a charity, there are similar amounts taken out for credit card processing and other costs. Crowdrise gives donors the option of paying a separate processing fee ? but doing so does nothing to increase the amount going to that particular charity. Rather, the for-profit startup says it keeps the money so that it can reduce fees overall.

That said, I'm reaching out to people who normally might not have given, either because they weren't thinking about it or didn't know whom to give to. Others might have given more knowing that I'm supporting the cause. So those extra donations more than cover the transaction fees.

Anick Jesdanun, deputy technology editor for The Associated Press, can be reached at njesdanun@ap.org.

Though the medical community remains split on whether or not Internet addiction exists, effects have been seen in both men and women who can't shut down their technology. "Both have substituted virtual friends and reality for real reality," said NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman.

Why Obama is surely facing a disappointing 2nd term

By Walter Shapiro

Now that the last election of his political career is behind him, President Barack Obama can concentrate on braking to avoid the fiscal cliff, re-staffing much of his administration and pausing to reflect on his long-term governing agenda. Then, of course, there is the still-sputtering economy, Iran?s nuclear ambitions, the aftermath of the stunning resignatioin of David Petraeus and enough other crises to justify a sign over the Oval Office reading, ?Stress for Success.?

But the re-elected president should be worrying about something else as well: the Second-Term Curse.

Dating back to Woodrow Wilson?s 1919 failure to bring the United States into the League of Nations, second presidential terms have almost always been disappointing and sad. There have been successes: Ronald Reagan passing tax reform in 1986 and Bill Clinton balancing the budget. But far more common are thwarted ambitions, scandal and a slow slide towards political irrelevance.

?This time it?s different? would be the likely response from Obama?s true believers. And these acolytes could be correct since historical patterns are merely suggestive rather than Marxist Iron Laws. But still it is likely that sometime before Moving Van Day in 2017, Obama will be embarrassed by at least one of these four factors:

Hubris: For decades, the dictionary definition was Franklin Roosevelt?s ill-fated 1937 effort to pack the Supreme Court to eliminate an anti-New Deal majority. Having just carried 46 states in an electoral landslide, FDR blithely assumed that anything he proposed would be rubber-stamped by a Congress so Democratic that all 16 Senate Republicans could probably have crammed into a Capitol Hill phone booth.

Wrong. With scant warning two weeks after his second inauguration, Roosevelt announced his plan to expand the Supreme Court. The reaction even among many partisan Democrats was that this was an unwarranted power grab. After failing to win a majority of the overwhelmingly Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee, the court-packing plan died on the Senate floor.

There is a potent contemporary example of a president misreading his re-election mandate. George W. Bush told Republican leaders in early 2005 that the partial privatization of Social Security was at the top of his legislative agenda, even though the president had only flicked at the issue during the 2004 campaign.

With the conspicuous exception of Paul Ryan and a few others, congressional Republicans recoiled at the electoral consequences. Democrats were apoplectic on policy grounds. The Social Security plan was never even voted on in Congress. In his mostly unrevealing autobiography, ?Decision Points,? Bush himself concedes, ?If I had it to do over again, I would have pushed for immigration reform rather than Social Security as the first major initiative of my second term.?

While Obama?s vague re-election pronouncements worked tactically, they provided him with a limited policy mandate beyond educational programs and resisting extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. As a result, an ambitious response to global warming (an issue too hot for Obama the candidate) could prove to be this president?s version of Social Security privatization.

Personnel: Having already churned through three White House chiefs of staff (plus an interim appointee), Obama is no stranger to ever-changing office name plates. The end of the presidential term is the moment to recast the Cabinet as familiar figures like an exhausted Hillary Clinton gleefully try a life without 3 a.m. phone calls.

Finding competent replacements is a challenge for any re-elected president, and it is especially acute for Obama, whose pre-presidential network was mostly Chicago-based. Slowly, the familiar faces like David Axelrod, Robert Gibbs and maybe someday Valerie Jarrett fade away. Tim Geithner, probably the major Cabinet figure whom Obama closely bonded with, is rumored to be moving on.

It is understandable: Life along the corridors of power is debilitating. The allure of a normal life, the lucrative private-sector offers and the understandable human urge to step outside the president?s shadow will make White House going-away-parties a second-term staple. For those few who remain through all eight years, on-the-job burnout is an occupational hazard worthy of OSHA.

Probably every president late in his second term has looked around at the White House staff or his Cabinet and asked himself, ?Who are those guys??

Scandal: One of the saddest press conference statements by a second-term president was Dwight Eisenhower?s 1958 defense of his beleaguered chief of staff, Sherman Adams: ?I admire his abilities. I respect him because of personal and official integrity. I need him.? Within days Adams, who had accepted a vicuna coat and other gifts from a New England industrialist, was cleaning out the desk in his West Wing office.

No modern president has been immune from scandal in his second term. Unless history has failed us completely, the sagas of Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton do not require elaboration.

Harry Truman, that beloved historical figure of average-guy rectitude, left the White House in 1953 with a record-low approval rating of just 22 percent because of influence-peddling scandals, as well as the Korean War. George W. Bush came close to hitting 25 percent approval in the waning days of his presidency partly because of an aura of incompetence dating back to the heck-of-a-job-Brownie federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

Given Obama?s heavy reliance on drone attacks, perhaps the most relevant cautionary lesson comes from a beloved second-term president. It was stubborn resistance to congressional oversight and impatience with the stodgy norms of national-security decision-making that led to Ronald Reagan?s 1986 Iran-contra scandal.

For those who do not remember it, it is hard to write with a straight face about a rogue operation being run out of the White House basement to swap arms to Iran for the release of hostages in Lebanon. And part of the money from Iran went to fund the Nicaraguan contras even though Congress had cut off funding to the right-wing foes of President Daniel Ortega. Throw in a national security adviser arriving in Tehran with a cake shaped like a key, swashbuckling Marine Colonel Oliver North and his blonde White House secretary, Fawn Hall, who helped him shred documents.

With quarter-century hindsight, it sounds like what you would get if the Marx Brothers made a foreign-policy movie. But, in reality, the Iran-contra scandal almost destroyed Reagan?s second term.

The Petraeus love triangle (or was it a rhombus?) is a reminder that a president cannot know everything about his appointees. It also underscores the dangers inherent in erecting marble statues for esteemed public officials prematurely. Other Obama picks for the Cabinet or the White House staff are likely to flame-out over the next four years, although probably with less tabloid trauma. That is the nature of the game in Washington ? and why second terms, in particular, can be so cruel.

Timetable: With the exception of an impeached Bill Clinton, every modern president has lost congressional seats in the sixth year of his presidential term. Unlike many seemingly immutable political rules, this one makes sense intuitively. After six years of anyone in the White House (even FDR or Reagan), the act begins to grow stale and voters crave a different kind of change.

What this means is that Obama probably has until the summer of 2014 to operate with maximum political leverage. After the 2014 congressional elections, he may begin to experience the first debilitating signs of lame-duckism. By the summer of 2015, Americans may find the early skirmishing for the presidential nomination more riveting than the seventh year of the Obama presidency.?

This is the moment when a president begins to realize that he is not irreplaceable?a transition that Bill Clinton is still grappling with.

Obama may react to the predictable challenges of the next four years with equanimity. But for many a president, the high water mark of the second term is the moment they put their left hand on the Bible and swear to preserve and protect the Constitution.??

Is a High-End Tablet Better Than a Cheap Laptop?

Is a High-End Tablet Better Than a Cheap Laptop? Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said last week that "a great tablet is better than a cheap PC." We're not quite so sure, but we're curious what you think. Would you buy a high-end tablet and a keyboard instead of a low-end laptop?or even a decent laptop, depending on price?

We touched on this topic last week, but with the Microsoft Surface out and Bluetooth keyboards for the iPad and Android tablets, you can get some serious work done on your tablet. That is, when you're not just surfing the web, playing games, and watching video on it. But would you buy a tablet instead of a laptop if the tablet were good enough?

Vatican digs in after gay marriage advances

Pope Benedict XVI waves upon his arrival for a meeting with the "Santa Cecilia" association, at the Vatican, Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. Latin is being resurrected at the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree Saturday creating a new pontifical academy for Latin studies to try to boost interest in the official language of the Roman Catholic Church that is nevertheless out of widespread use elsewhere. Benedict acknowledged Latin's fall from grace, saying future priests nowadays often learn only a "superficial" appreciation of Latin in seminaries. The new academy, which is part of the Vatican's culture office, will promote Latin through conferences, publications and instruction in Catholic schools, universities and seminaries. (AP) ? The Vatican is digging in after gay marriage initiatives scored big wins this week in the U.S. and Europe, vowing to never stop insisting that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

In a front-page article in Saturday's Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope's spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don't now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.

Catholic teaching holds that homosexuals should be respected and treated with dignity but that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered." The Vatican also opposes same-sex marriage, insisting on the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society.

The Vatican's anti-gay marriage media blitz came after three U.S. states approved same-sex marriage by popular vote in the election that returned Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency, Spain upheld its gay marriage law, and France pushed ahead with legislation that could see gay marriage legalized early next year.

"One might say the church, at least on this front, has been defeated," L'Osservatore Romano wrote. "But that's not the case."

The article insisted that Catholics were putting up a valiant fight to uphold church teaching in the face of "politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world" that are backed by institutions like the United Nations, which last year passed a non-binding resolution condemning anti-gay discrimination.

"The church is called to present itself as the lone critic of modernity, the only check ... to the breakup of the anthropological structures on which human society was founded," it said.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, for his part, said gays can have their rights protected by means other than through legal marital recognition. He stressed that children should have a right to say they have a father and a mother.

"If not, then why not contemplate freely chosen polygamy, and naturally so as to not discriminate, polyandry?" he asked sarcastically. Polyandry is when a woman has two or more husbands.

"As a result, don't expect the church to stop insisting that society recognizes a specific place for marriage between a man and woman," he said.

The U.S. election had been closely watched at the Vatican because of the strong divisions that erupted during the campaign between the Obama administration and U.S. bishops over gay marriage, which Obama endorsed in May. The administration and bishops clashed more vehemently over Obama's health care mandate requiring nearly all U.S. health insurance plans to cover contraception, which the church opposes.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said the contraception mandate ? which exempts houses of worship but applies to faith-affiliated employers ? is a violation of religious freedom.

The Vatican's reaction to Obama's re-election was tinged with such lingering criticism, with Pope Benedict XVI congratulating Obama and praying that the ideals of freedom and justice continue to be upheld.

Lombardi went further urging the administration to respect essential values in "promoting a culture of life and religious freedom" ? Vatican buzzwords referring to abortion, contraception and the insurance mandate.

It was a far cry from the Vatican's enthusiastic response to Obama's election in 2008. Then, the pope termed Obama's election an "historic occasion" in a personal note of congratulations sent right after he won, a break with traditional Vatican protocol that usually sees official telegrams of congratulations sent on inauguration day.
