Hereditary inequality began over 7,000 years ago in the early Neolithic era, with new evidence showing that farmers buried with tools had access to better land than those buried without.

The research, carried out by archaeologists from the Universities of Bristol, Cardiff and Oxford, is published in PNAS.

By studying more than 300 human skeletons from sites across central Europe, Professor Alex Bentley and an international team of colleagues funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council uncovered evidence of differential land access among the first Neolithic farmers ? the earliest such evidence yet found.

Strontium isotope analysis of the skeletons, which provides indications of place of origin, indicated that men buried with distinctive Neolithic stone adzes (tools used for smoothing or carving wood) had less variable isotope signatures than men buried without adzes. This suggests those buried with adzes had access to closer ? and probably better ? land than those buried without.

Professor Bentley, Professor of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol, said: "The men buried with adzes appear to have lived on food grown in areas of loess, the fertile and productive soil favoured by early farmers. This indicates they had consistent access to preferred farming areas."

The strontium isotope analysis also revealed that early Neolithic women were more likely than men to have originated from areas outside those where their bodies were found. This is a strong indication of patrilocality, a male-centred kinship system where females move to reside in the location of the males when they marry.

This new evidence from the skeletons is consistent with other archaeological, genetic, anthropological and even linguistic evidence for patrilocality in Neolithic Europe. The results have implications for genetic modelling of how human populations expanded in the Neolithic, for which sex-biased mobility patterns and status differences are increasing seen as crucial.

Professor Bentley said: "Our results, along with archaeobotanical studies that indicate the earliest farmers of Neolithic Germany had a system of land tenure, suggest that the origins of differential access to land can be traced back to an early part of the Neolithic era, rather than only to later prehistory when inequality and intergenerational wealth transfers are more clearly evidenced in burials and material culture.

"It seems the Neolithic era introduced heritable property (land and livestock) into Europe and that wealth inequality got underway when this happened. After that, of course, there was no looking back: through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Industrial era wealth inequality increased but the 'seeds' of inequality were sown way back in the Neolithic."

Aurora mayor eyes loan to RTD to speed up work on I-225 light rail

If Aurora wants to see light rail along the entire Interstate 225 corridor anytime soon, it might have to fund it upfront itself.

That's the message coming from Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, who, like others in the city, is frustrated that the FasTracks project is off track because of a lack of funding.

The Regional Transportation District estimates that light rail through the I-225 corridor ? one of the most congested stretches in the state ? could be completed by 2026. But some are skeptical that date is realistic and contend even if it is accurate, it is too much time to spend completing the project.

Without another tax hike to fund FasTracks, projects like the I-225 corridor could be delayed for years. A coalition of metro-area mayors has balked at asking voters for another tax increase this year or next to further the project, citing the continued struggles in the economy.

So Hogan envisions either asking Aurora voters in 2013 for a sales-tax or property-tax increase to complete the light rail project from East Iliff Avenue to Smith Road near Interstate 70. That stretch of light rail would connect with the east line project running between Union Station and Denver International Airport.

If approved, Aurora would front the money to RTD, which would oversee the construction of the project, then the city could get reimbursed for the costs over time.

At least that's the idea.

Light rail now runs from Interstate 25 in Denver, along I-225 to South Parker Road. Construction is underway to extend that more than 1.5 miles from Parker Road to Iliff. But the majority of the corridor, including the growing Anschutz Medical Campus, will remain unserved by light rail. The entire corridor is about 12 miles long.

"The way to get this done early is to think about doing it ourselves," Hogan said. "Everybody understands we have got to get light rail to the Anschutz Medical Campus."

The campus sees upward of 40,000 "vehicle movements" a day, said RTD board member Tom Tobiassen, who represents Aurora on the board, and there are only 19,000 parking spaces at the campus, located at the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.

Tobiassen supports having more discussions with Aurora about Hogan's idea that Aurora could "loan" the money to RTD.

"The need is bad right now, and it's going to get worse as the campus continues to add jobs," Tobiassen said.

RTD is soliciting bids from private companies for the I-225 project and other unfinished transportation projects in the metro area. Tobiassen said RTD expects to see proposals sometime in mid-June.

Aurora and other communities waiting for the projects to be completed will have a better sense of what needs to be done and how those projects could be funded sometime after that.

The Aurora City Council has not had formal discussions on whether to go to voters next year.

Councilman Bob Broom, however, agrees that steps need to be taken to ensure light rail on I-225.

"I think Steve's right. We can't just throw up our hands and say that's not going to get done," Broom said. "If RTD doesn't raise revenues, it's going to take a long time."

Beetle-fungus disease threatens crops and landscape trees in Southern California

ScienceDaily (May 8, 2012) ? A plant pathologist at the University of California, Riverside has identified a fungus that has been linked to the branch dieback and general decline of several backyard avocado and landscape trees in residential neighborhoods of Los Angeles County.

The fungus is a new species of Fusarium. Scientists are working on characterizing its specific identification. It is transmitted by the Tea Shot Hole Borer (Euwallacea fornicatus), an exotic ambrosia beetle that is smaller than a sesame seed. The disease it spreads is referred to as "Fusarium dieback."

"This beetle has also been found in Israel and since 2009, the beetle-fungus combination has caused severe damage to avocado trees there," said Akif Eskalen, an extension plant pathologist UC Riverside, whose lab identified the fungus.

To date, the Tea Shot Hole Borer has been reported on 18 different plant species worldwide, including avocado, tea, citrus, guava, lychee, mango, persimmon, pomegranate, macadamia and silk oak.

Eskalen explained that the beetle and fungus have a symbiotic relationship.

"When the beetle burrows into the tree, it inoculates the host plant with the fungus it carries in its mouth parts," he said. "The fungus then attacks the vascular tissue of the tree, disturbing water and nutrient flow, and eventually causing branch dieback. The beetle larvae live in galleries within the tree and feed on the fungus."

Although the beetle was first detected in Los Angeles County in 2003, reports of its negative impact on tree health were paid no attention until February 2012, when Eskalen found both the beetle and fungus on a backyard avocado tree showing dieback symptoms in South Gate, Los Angeles County. The Agricultural Commissioner of Los Angeles County and the California Food and Drug Administration have confirmed the identity of the beetle.

"This is the very same fungus that caused avocado dieback in Israel," Eskalen said. "The California Avocado Commission is concerned about the economic damage this fungus can do to the industry here in California.

"For now, we are asking gardeners to keep an eye on their trees and report to us any sign of the fungus or beetle," he added. "Symptoms in avocado include the appearance of white powdery exudate in association with a single beetle exit hole on the bark of the trunk and main branches of the tree. This exudate could be dry or it can appear as a wet discoloration."

A team of UCR scientists has been formed to study Fusarium dieback in Southern California. Eskalen and Alex Gonzalez, a field specialist, are already conducting a survey to determine the extent of the beetle infestation and the likely extent of the fungus infection in avocado trees and other host plants. Richard Stouthamer, a professor of entomology, and Paul Rugman-Jones, an associate specialist in entomology, are studying the biology and genetics of the beetle.

Blue Mountains Union News: AMWU: Workers Comp warning

Manufacturing employers will be hit with industrial claims for top-up insurance if injured workers? entitlements are slashed as expected in the NSW Government?s workers comp shake-up, warns the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.

The AMWU has written to Premier O?Farrell and employer representatives to inform them it will claim the top-up insurance during enterprise bargaining negotiations.

?Manufacturing is the most dangerous industry in NSW by far, generating the highest number of serious workplace injuries. We had a tragic fatality at a heavy engineering site in Western Sydney just yesterday,? said AMWU NSW Secretary Tim Ayres.

?Any changes to the workers compensation scheme that cuts entitlements to injured workers and bereaved families will disproportionately affect manufacturing workers.

?Premier O?Farrell and the employer lobby are on notice that if they buddy up to slash the entitlements of injured manufacturing workers, we will take them on.?

Manufacturing in NSW accounts for about 10% of the workforce but 16% of all major workplace injures and 20% of the cost of the Workers Compensation Scheme. Over the past two decades manufacturing has consistently represented the largest portion of total payments for injury and disease.

The risks manufacturing workers are exposed to include catastrophic injury from working with heavy machinery, exposure to chemicals and repetitive strain injuries.

?Employers complain their premiums are higher than in other states. That?s because workers in NSW are getting seriously injured more regularly than in other states,? said Mr Ayres.

?If NSW employers want to bring their premiums down, they should focus on providing safer workplaces where workers don?t get injured and killed.?

The AMWU is in consultation with an insurance company to develop an appropriate product to cover any entitlement shortfall for manufacturing workers.

The AMWU has enterprise agreements with around 500 manufacturing businesses in NSW and will include the claim for top-up insurance as these agreements come up for renegotiation, if current entitlements to injured workers are reduced as expected.

MIAMI (AP) ? Udonis Haslem insists he meant no harm. The NBA deemed otherwise, and the Miami Heat will be without one of their co-captains when they try to close out the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night.

Haslem was suspended for Game 6 of the Miami-Indiana Eastern Conference semifinal series, a matchup where emotions boiled over in a runaway Heat victory on Tuesday night. The NBA also said Miami reserve center Dexter Pittman will miss three games in response to his flagrant foul against Indiana backup guard Lance Stephenson in the final seconds of Game 5.

Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough was not suspended, although the league upgraded his foul against Miami's Dwyane Wade to a flagrant-2 on Wednesday ? which, if called that way during Game 5, would have brought an automatic ejection. Hansbrough struck Wade in the head, opening a cut over his right eye. Moments later, Haslem committed a flagrant foul against Hansbrough, clearly in response to the play against Wade.

So while Haslem sits Thursday, Hansbrough may play.

"It's very disappointing, obviously," Miami forward Shane Battier said Wednesday night. "But we're a resilient group. ... The verdict process is a mystery to players, and so we don't get caught up in it. We can't control it. We know the NBA's going to do what they feel they need to do and we need to live with the consequences. So it's really out of our hands, not worth getting riled up. We're going to put together an effort that will make Udonis and Dexter proud."

The Heat lead the series 3-2, after a 115-83 win Tuesday night in a game that had the three flagrant fouls on the court, accusations of dirty play afterward and finally with Pacers team president Larry Bird telling The Indianapolis Star that his team was "soft" in Game 5.

"I agree with his assessment. We did play soft," Indiana's Danny Granger said Wednesday. "We got smacked around. We got beat up, we got bullied, and we really didn't respond well."

Countered Miami's LeBron James, the NBA's reigning MVP: "He's just trying to amp them up. That's all. That's all it is. He knows his team isn't soft. But with them, with their backs against the wall at this point, he knows what he's doing. He's not the executive of the year for no reason."

Pittman logged only six minutes in the playoffs anyway, his presence in the postseason barely noticed until he laid out Stephenson ? who made at least one choke sign toward James earlier in the series ? with a forearm to the chin and shoulder areas.

"Hard fouls are part of the playoffs," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said Wednesday. "Fouls to the head have no place in this game, not by us, not by Miami, not by any other team in any other series. With all the concussion research that's been going on over the last few years it's a very serious matter and it just doesn't have any place in the game."

Wade sounded somewhat amused that Granger ? who's been whistled for three technicals in the series ? was one of the Pacers suggesting Haslem and Pittman should be suspended. Wade and Granger have had words during the series.

"We're not in here crying about the fouls," Wade said. "They fouled us. ... We're moving on to Game 6. We're not going to worry about what happened in Game 5. For us, it's about moving forward."

The Pacers may move forward without Granger, who sprained his left ankle in Game 5.

Granger was in flip-flops when Wednesday's practice ended, saying he was on painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. Stephenson, who had X-rays taken to rule out any fractures to his collarbone or shoulder areas, did not practice.

"In my mind, I'm going to play," Granger said. "Elimination game, I have to play."

Vogel sounded concerned, but optimistic.

"Very much hoping he'll be available tomorrow," Vogel said. "He's a gamer. I'm thinking he'll play. But his ankle's pretty bad, so we'll see."

Vogel called Miami floppers before the series started, and it's been gritty throughout. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws in Game 1, and there have been a combined nine technicals and flagrants called in the four games since. Tension also increased after cameras caught Stephenson making a choke sign during Indiana's Game 3 victory, and Juwan Howard confronting him about his antics before Game 4.

"It's been a physical series, started by them," Wade said.

And James said he doesn't expect things to cool down when the Pacers try to save their season in Game 6.

"I always feel like in a playoff series or certain regular-season games that a team may be trying to go for me," James said. "It's happened. I'm not saying guys are playing dirty, but certain guys say, 'You know, if you hard-foul LeBron, get him off the ball, he'll stop being aggressive and things like that.' I know when it's happening and I see when it's about to happen. I'm always in protect mode. I've been hard-fouled a lot."

James said one of those situations happened in Game 5. Indiana forward David West ? who left Tuesday's game with what the team called a sprained knee, though he insisted Wednesday he was not hurt ? took exception to a play where he was knocked backward, saying a Heat player fell into his knee. On that play, replays showed West was boxed out by Battier, but it appeared no one hit West in the knee area.

Not long afterward, West fouled James, who said he saw it coming.

"He was the one on the floor and I was the one still standing," James said. "So I started laughing at that. But he tried to get me."

West said on Wednesday that if Indiana wants to force a Game 7 in Miami, it simply needs to play better on both ends than it did on Tuesday night.

"You've just got to stand your ground. I think that's the biggest thing," West said. "It was unfortunate, the play at the end of the game on Lance. But we've just got to deal with it, man up, handle it ? like I said, the best way you can, within the rules."

The Libyan Megrahi, convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, died ...

Libyan Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, convicted only for the Lockerbie bombing in 1988 in Scotland, died on Sunday in Tripoli at the age of 60 years died of cancer nearly three years after his release in 2009, when doctors had given him three months to live.

According Abdelhakim his brother, Abdel Basset al-Megrahi died shortly after 1:00 p.m. (1100 GMT), in her home in Damascus Avenue, in a residential area in central Tripoli.

He was hospitalized last month for a blood transfusion in a ?very critical?, before returning home to be with his family, who said while Abdelbaset days were ?numbered?.

Sunday early afternoon, the family was reunited in the house and prepared to receive condolences, while the street could be heard weeping relatives, according to an AFP correspondent.

?He died and left us with this sense of injustice,? lamented Abdelhakim Megrahi denouncing a ?political matter and information? in that his brother was ?the scapegoat? of the old regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

?Everybody knows that the Gaddafi regime put his mistakes on the backs of others?, he added AFP.

?All the darkness of this world will not hide the flame (?) the truth,? said Mohamed on his side, another brother of Abdel Basset.

?In the past decade, more than ten babies born in the family of Abdel Basset Megrahi. One day these babies will get an apology from the world,? he further said.

Born 1 April 1952 in Tripoli, married with five children, Megrahi was sentenced in 2001 to life imprisonment for his involvement in the explosion of a Boeing 747 of Pan Am over Lockerbie, Scotland, who had killed 270 people.

He was released by the Scottish justice for humanitarian grounds in 2009, doctors diagnosed with terminal cancer.

His release had raised an outcry, especially among families of the victims, especially since it seemed more dying in his triumphant arrival in Tripoli, and he has survived so far, despite the doctors had given him three months to live.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Sunday that it had to ?remember? the Lockerbie victims, after the death of Libyan.

?Today we must remember the 270 people who lost their lives in this terrible attack,? said David Cameron in the British media in Chicago, where there is a NATO summit.

Romney's record at Bain Capital is fair game, Obama says

President Obama's comments come a day after Newark Mayor Cory Booker, usually an Obama ally, criticized the Obama campaign's attacks on Mitt Romney's work in private equity.

President Obama defended his campaign attacks on Mitt Romney?s record in private equity, arguing that since Mr. Romney is using his business experience as his top argument for becoming president, his record deserves scrutiny.

Mr. Obama?s statement, made at a press conference Monday in Chicago at the end of the 2012 NATO summit, came a day after Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker ? usually an Obama ally ? called the attacks on Romney and his former firm, Bain Capital, ?nauseating.?

The Romney campaign and the Republican Party have been having a field day trying to exploit the Democratic schism with videos, Twitter ads, and a petition to ?stand with Cory Booker? and ?stand up for job creators.?

?What I would say is, Mr. Romney is responsible for the proposals he?s putting forward for how he says he?s going to fix the economy,? Obama said. ?And if the main basis for him suggesting he can do a better job is his track record as the head of a private-equity firm, then both the upsides and the downsides are worth examining.?

Obama also offered up a tutorial on the difference between being president and running a private-equity firm. When you?re president, he said, your job is not just to maximize profits.

?Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot,? the president said. ?Your job is to think about those workers who get laid off, and how are we paying for their retraining. Your job is to think about how those communities can start creating new clusters so that they can attract new businesses.?

Obama continued, ?Your job as president is to think about, how do we set up an equitable tax system, so that everybody?s paying their fair share, that allows us to invest in science and technology and infrastructure, all of which will help us grow.?

Mayor Booker?s defense of private equity Sunday on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? rocketed into the political stratosphere, as he explained that he lives ?in a state where pension funds, unions, and other people invest in companies like Bain Capital.?

?If you look at the totality of Bain Capital's record, they've done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses,? Booker said.

Other Democrats, including former Rep. Harold Ford of Tennessee and Steve Rattner, Obama?s former ?car czar,? have also come to the defense of the private-equity world as a source of capital to grow businesses and jobs.

The Obama campaign has focused attacks on the companies that ended up failing under Bain ? even as Bain itself profited.

On Monday, Obama also defended Booker as ?an outstanding mayor? who is ?doing great work in Newark? to turn the city around. But he took issue with Booker?s characterization that the campaign attacks are a ?distraction.? Booker had criticized both the Obama campaign?s attacks on Bain Capital and a proposal (not by the Romney campaign) to use Obama?s former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to attack the president.

Romney reacted to Obama?s press conference by accusing the president of refusing to take moral responsibility for his ?failed policies.?

?President Obama confirmed today that he will continue his attacks on the free enterprise system, which Mayor Booker and other leading Democrats have spoken out against,? the former governor of Massachusetts said in a statement. ?What this election is about is the 23 million Americans who are still struggling to find work and the millions who have lost their homes and have fallen into poverty. President Obama refuses to accept moral responsibility for his failed policies. My campaign is offering a positive agenda to help America get back to work.?
