Wade joins chorus of upset NBA, NFL athletes on Twitter

Heat star Dwyane Wade was among the high-profile athletes who reacted angrily to Saturday?s acquittal of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in Sanford.

Dwyane Wade was the only Heat player who tweeted about the case shortly afterward, saying: ?Wow! Stunned!! Saddened as a father!! Som1 make sense of this verdict for me right now please!!! ? How do I explain this to my boys??

Numerous other NBA players weighed in, including Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, who tweeted: ?America justice system is a joke.? Golden State guard Stephen Curry said: ?Wait, [Zimmerman] gets his gun back, too??

Among the tweets from Dolphins players: Receiver Mike Wallace: ?Wowwwwwww. (Expletive) crazy.?? Tight end Charles Clay: ?Dats some bull [expletive].?

Defensive end Derrick Shelby: ?There might be riots.? Receiver Armon Binns: ?The justice system failed today. My prayers go out to Trayvon?s family.?

At least two players from other NFL teams apologized on Sunday for their comments on the matter.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White tweeted on Saturday: ?[Expletive] Zimmerman got away with murder today. Wow what kind of world do we live in. ? All them jurors should go home and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid.?

On Sunday, White tweeted: ?I understand my tweet last [night] was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry.?

After the verdict, New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz predicted ?Zimmerman doesn?t last a year before the hood catches up with him.?

On Sunday, Cruz tweeted: ?I apologize. That?s why I deleted it. I believe conversation, not confrontation, leads to change and progress.?

Meanwhile, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Harrison tweeted: ?Then I?ll go pick a fight and get my [butt] kicked, then pull my gun and kill somebody and see if I can get away.?

Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson tweeted: ?Damn, Plaxico Burress shot HIMSELF and got 2 yrs! This dude shot and killed another. ? Living in a world where you fight dogs, you could lose everything [Mike Vick]. If you kill a black man, you?re not guilty. #Injustice system.?

Meanwhile, UM running back Duke Johnson tweeted: ?Heavy heart right now for the Martin family, and I just want everyone to say a prayer for the Martin family.?

UM safety Deon Bush tweeted: ?Straight b.s.! Reverse the sides and Trayvon would of had a life sentence. Maybe death sentence.? Bush deleted the second half of that tweet later Sunday.

(AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder late Saturday night and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom may be limited.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Demonstrators upset with the verdict protested mostly peacefully in Florida, Milwaukee, Washington, Atlanta and other cities overnight and into the early morning Sunday, but some broke windows and vandalized a police squad car in Oakland during protests in four California cities, authorities said. Additional demonstrations were scheduled across the country through Sunday evening.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters nationwide lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford as it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, said Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

Jurors were sequestered during the trial, and they deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict. The court did not release the racial and ethnic makeup of the jury, but the panel appeared to reporters covering selection to be made up of five white women and a sixth who may be Hispanic.

In August 2012, defense attorney Mark O'Mara said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living like hermits and weren't working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching reacted strongly when the verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when it was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking toward the courthouse.

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

Protesters had taken to the streets late Saturday and into Sunday morning in Florida and other states, largely heeding the advice of officials and others who urged them not to resort to violence.

Authorities said in California media reports that some marchers in Oakland vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block some demonstrators there. TV news helicopter footage showed some people trying to start fires in the street and spray painting anti-police graffiti. The demonstration followed a raucous but largely peaceful protest in San Francisco and another in Los Angeles. An Oakland police dispatch said about 100 people protested there but gave no word of any arrests

Celebrities also reacted. Beyonce called at a Nashville concert for a moment of silence for Martin. Rapper Young Jeezy released a song in Martin's memory and Russell Simmons called for peace.

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started a petition calling for the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman. "The most fundamental of civil rights ? the right to life ? was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Jealous wrote in the petition, posted on the website MoveOn.org and addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, Crump said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, said Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him as a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. President Barack Obama also had weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

Travis sedated, in critical condition after surgery

Grammy-winning country music singer Randy Travis is still in critical condition following emergency surgery earlier this week, after suffering a stroke in a Texas hospital, his spokesman said on Friday.

"Mr. Randy Travis has been under heavy sedation since he came out of surgery late Wednesday night, July 10th, and is resting comfortably. He is still in critical condition," Travis' publicist Kirt Webster said in a statement.

Travis, 54, underwent a procedure to relieve pressure on the brain at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, located north of Dallas, on Wednesday. He had been admitted to hospital last week for a heart condition caused by a virus.

A six-time Grammy award winner known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses," Travis has received an outpouring of support from country music stars and his fans.

Webster said Travis' family continued to ask for prayers and support as he recovers.

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

The iPad offerings were all over the place, jumping from intensive weather details to a news-reading puppy to enough emoji to ensure that you never have to use words for feelings ever again. But then again, that?s what life is all about, after all?anthropomorphised dogs and avoiding face-to-face human interactions at all costs. Or something like that.

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

WunderMap: The Weather Underground, the very first online weather service (we think) has finally come to iPad. You?ll get everything you?ve come to love about the service including viewing weather station webcams and get down to as many levels of detail as you want by choosing various map layers for satellite, radar, and weather station readings. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

GroupMe: GroupMe?s a lifechanger. You should use it. This week it got emoji (good) that for some insane reason use its logo in place of a human head, and then attach things like beards and devil horns and headphones to it (uhh). The emoji update is just on iOS (iPhone and iPad), but will be on Android and Windows Phone 8 ?soon?. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

Guide: A news app for the reading disinclined, Guide is essentially an RSS that talks to you. You choose which topics pique your interest, and the app then takes you to news pieces you might find interesting. At that point, though, is when an adorable virtual puppy takes over and reads until he can?t read no more (or until you tell it to stop). You can even add your own sources that the app might not already have pre-loaded. At the very least, it?s a fun way of staying up-to-date when your eyes have to be busy elsewhere. [Free]

2 killed, suspect arrested at SF shopping center

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Two women were killed and a man was wounded on Friday before a suspect covered in blood was arrested at a shopping center in a crowded San Francisco neighborhood that is home to police headquarters and several tech companies, authorities said.

Investigators were trying to determine if the shooting was connected to a botched robbery.

Responding officers encountered the suspect outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area. At first they were not sure if the man, who had blood on his clothes, was a shooting victim or a suspect, police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The man, whose name was not released, opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, Suhr said. The man kept shooting until he apparently ran out of ammunition and surrendered, Suhr said.

Officers did not return fire because the sidewalks were crowded with shoppers and residents.

The suspect was treated at a hospital for unknown injuries.

SWAT officers swept the building, but police said there were no outstanding suspects.

"We believe from video in an adjacent store that there was one suspect. We believe that it is the suspect we have in custody," Suhr said.

The man arrested had been in that area before, according to witnesses.

After the arrest, officers went inside the shopping center and found the two women dead in the lobby. Their names were not immediately available. A witness said at least one of the women worked at a jewelry store inside the building.

Another man with unknown injuries was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The shopping center is just blocks from the Hall of Justice, which is the home of San Francisco Superior Court, a jail and police headquarters. Several tech companies, including online game maker Zynga, are also in the neighborhood.

Officers were interviewing witnesses who ducked for cover when the shooting began.

"Somebody was crying or yelling for help. Then I saw the SWAT. There was a dozen of them. They told us to lock ourselves in," Veronica Sirois, who was shopping at the gift center, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I saw blood on the way out and a pair of bodies."

Plans to create 5000 jobs in oil and gas industry in Highlands

Thousands of jobs could be created in the Highlands after plans were unveiled to create an energy hub for the oil and gas industry.

Energy minister Fergus Ewing said the facility in Inverness would enable the region to benefit from Aberdeen's status as the oil capital of Europe.

Mr Ewing chaired a meeting to look at ways of attracting investment north and plugging the skills gap, with the goal of creating 5000 jobs.

The North Oil and Gas Steering Group will invite industry leaders to work with education and public agencies to help exploit the region's potential.

Mr Ewing said: "Nigg have had terrific success and they've got a floating production vessel there as we speak, which is excellent news.

"We''ve got North Highland College, a centre of excellence in engineering, we've got a lot of activity in Wick and in Tain and here in Invernes and many other parts of the Highlands and Islands.

"We want all local authorities to play a part in the work going forward and I see great opportunities for young people to have a smashing career in oil and gas."

City champ keeps it loose on golf course

? Amber Sieber has had quite a few people calling her choice words lately: Defending champion.

?Everybody is saying, ?Oh, you are the defending champion.? I?ve heard it like 100 times this week. Is it that big a deal??

Yes, it is.

Especially when they?re talking about the Fort Wayne Women?s Golf Association City Tournament, which has been run since Hillis Snyder won the first one in 1931.

And Sieber, 34, has never held this title before.

After years of trying, she won last year at Brookwood Golf Club by shooting a three-day total of 5-under 214 and defeating four-time champion Michelle Smith on the first playoff hole.

Cue the goings on this week, when friends, family, people at church, even those on the course at Coyote Creek Golf Club ? site of this year?s tournament ? made sure that Sieber knew this is a whole different ballgame this year.

But Sieber is easygoing about golf; she is much more concerned with taking care of her kids than worrying about the amount of draw on her irons.

Which isn?t to say she doesn?t practice; recently, while on a family trip to catch walleye in Minnesota, she snuck in some golf.

It?s just that she?s a different kind of player than when she played at Ohio State. She doesn?t take it too seriously and she goes for the gusto instead of playing it safe.

?My dad starts to giggle when I talk about not playing for three weeks and still shooting 3 under,? Sieber said. ?He says, ?I can?t believe it. I just don?t understand.? But when I get out there, it?s my one chance and there?s no pressure.

?I play a lot more fearlessly now and whereas, years ago, I?d think that I?d better lay with my 5-iron, now I just swing my driver and go for it.?

Coyote Creek can be a much more treacherous course than Brookwood, which had played host to the past several City Tournaments, and Sieber is glad for the change.

?I love that it?s at a new course,? she said. ?The reason why is that it will bring out the real talent. That?s what I think. When you play the same course all the time, you start knowing where your shots have to go, where to lay it up, and where you need to be to shoot for the pins. This will be different.?

Smith will try to join Pat Wright, Jean Saint, Pat McGary and Helen Greiner as the only players with five or more titles. Other contenders this year include Ashton Taft, Lakin Davis, Lori Stinson, Hilary Bowman, Sarah Dusman, Karley Dobis, Lauren Gant, Michelle Gerbasich, Katie Giant and Allison Curtis.

?Coyote Creek is definitely challenging,? Sieber said. ?It makes me really excited, and I?m anticipating the day.?
