Formality vs Informality in Today's Home - Nick Scali

Generations ago homes would often have a formal sitting room, parlour or drawing room where only the most honoured guests were entertained. For most of us over the years this has changed to a ?catch all? lounge or living room where we plant our televisions and spend a lot of our time. At Nick Scali Furniture, much of what we feature works perfectly in these settings.

However, with more and more people creating a ?home theatre? room, maybe it?s time to strike that more formal tone in our lounges again. What do you think?

The feeling of furniture

Certainly we aren?t going to start bringing high arched-back, crushed red velvet settees back into our homes, but if you compare the variety of lounges featured in Nick Scali showrooms, you?ll find some that help you create an air of informality, while others ?step it up? a little. Let?s consider the feel of furniture in two ways: what would be ideal for a home theatre setting and what would we prefer when entertaining important guests.

Starting with a lounge like the Dominic (in white) from the Nick Scali Furniture catalogue, it?s easy to see that it would fit better into a lounge for entertaining rather than an informal family home theatre. It is absolutely comfortable enough for either room, but with the heavy traffic from kids in a home theatre, its beautiful white colour might not be the best choice.

Coffee table pairing

But just as you bring out the best dinnerware when you entertain important guests, they would also feel honoured sitting on a beautiful leather lounge like the Dominic. Of course, you?ll want to pair it up with a coffee table that delivers an equally sleek and modern look. Nick Scali offers many that would work. Echoing the white of the lounge would be a good idea, so a table like the Studio would be an excellent choice.

Looking at furniture from the other side, in the home theatre room, you?re going to want the accent to be placed on ?inviting comfort.? Probably the most extreme example of this would be seating with builtin recliners. They would not be a ?first choice? for your formal lounge, but would be perfect for a home theatre setting.

Recliners

Today Nick Scali Furniture carries recliners in both separate chair and sofa configurations. You could easily furnish a home theatre setting entirely with recliner seating, giving everyone the perfect perch from which to enjoy a long movie.

The home theatre room would also be a better location for a Nick Scali home entertainment unit with ample shelving. In the formal lounge such a unit would be more out of place. When it?s important that the ?focus? be on your guests, having a television in the room can be a major distraction.

If you have the opportunity to create separate lounge and home theatre rooms, give some thought to making your lounge a very special area that will really ?wow? your guests.
