Plans to create 5000 jobs in oil and gas industry in Highlands

Thousands of jobs could be created in the Highlands after plans were unveiled to create an energy hub for the oil and gas industry.

Energy minister Fergus Ewing said the facility in Inverness would enable the region to benefit from Aberdeen's status as the oil capital of Europe.

Mr Ewing chaired a meeting to look at ways of attracting investment north and plugging the skills gap, with the goal of creating 5000 jobs.

The North Oil and Gas Steering Group will invite industry leaders to work with education and public agencies to help exploit the region's potential.

Mr Ewing said: "Nigg have had terrific success and they've got a floating production vessel there as we speak, which is excellent news.

"We''ve got North Highland College, a centre of excellence in engineering, we've got a lot of activity in Wick and in Tain and here in Invernes and many other parts of the Highlands and Islands.

"We want all local authorities to play a part in the work going forward and I see great opportunities for young people to have a smashing career in oil and gas."
