Five days after oil marketers called off their strikes following Federal Government?s promise to pay them subsidy arrears for imported fuel, they have yet to receive the Sovereign Debt Notes from the Debt Management Office for the payment.
The Chairman, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, Chief Dapo Abiodun, told our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that although many of them had got payment advice from the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency for the debt notes, ?none of us has seen anything yet.?
?The information we are getting is that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has stopped it,? he added.
The Federal Government had last week Thursday directed the DMO to pay the marketers all verified subsidy claims in a bid to avert scarcity of petroleum products that could have resulted from the strike by the marketers to protest the non-payment.
The Minister of Finance said the claims would be paid as soon as the PPPRA provided the supporting Sovereign Debt Notes.
She, however, did not give the total amount to be paid to the marketers.
The oil marketers, operating under the aegis of DAPPMA, and Jetty and Petroleum Tank Farm Owners of Nigeria, as well as the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, had embarked on the strike last week. The strike was called off on Saturday after a meeting with the PPPRA.
Abiodun told our correspondent that after Federal Government?s promise to pay the subsidy arrears, most oil marketers had gone ahead to pay the PPPRA?s charges and the Petroleum Equalisation Fund charges, which were conditions that must be met before the Sovereign Debt Notes were issued.
?Many of us have paid additional charges, but we have yet to see the Debt Notes. We are still wondering what is going on. Our situation has not changed. We are still the way we are.?
