Wade joins chorus of upset NBA, NFL athletes on Twitter

Heat star Dwyane Wade was among the high-profile athletes who reacted angrily to Saturday?s acquittal of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in Sanford.

Dwyane Wade was the only Heat player who tweeted about the case shortly afterward, saying: ?Wow! Stunned!! Saddened as a father!! Som1 make sense of this verdict for me right now please!!! ? How do I explain this to my boys??

Numerous other NBA players weighed in, including Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, who tweeted: ?America justice system is a joke.? Golden State guard Stephen Curry said: ?Wait, [Zimmerman] gets his gun back, too??

Among the tweets from Dolphins players: Receiver Mike Wallace: ?Wowwwwwww. (Expletive) crazy.?? Tight end Charles Clay: ?Dats some bull [expletive].?

Defensive end Derrick Shelby: ?There might be riots.? Receiver Armon Binns: ?The justice system failed today. My prayers go out to Trayvon?s family.?

At least two players from other NFL teams apologized on Sunday for their comments on the matter.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White tweeted on Saturday: ?[Expletive] Zimmerman got away with murder today. Wow what kind of world do we live in. ? All them jurors should go home and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid.?

On Sunday, White tweeted: ?I understand my tweet last [night] was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry.?

After the verdict, New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz predicted ?Zimmerman doesn?t last a year before the hood catches up with him.?

On Sunday, Cruz tweeted: ?I apologize. That?s why I deleted it. I believe conversation, not confrontation, leads to change and progress.?

Meanwhile, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Harrison tweeted: ?Then I?ll go pick a fight and get my [butt] kicked, then pull my gun and kill somebody and see if I can get away.?

Buffalo Bills receiver Stevie Johnson tweeted: ?Damn, Plaxico Burress shot HIMSELF and got 2 yrs! This dude shot and killed another. ? Living in a world where you fight dogs, you could lose everything [Mike Vick]. If you kill a black man, you?re not guilty. #Injustice system.?

Meanwhile, UM running back Duke Johnson tweeted: ?Heavy heart right now for the Martin family, and I just want everyone to say a prayer for the Martin family.?

UM safety Deon Bush tweeted: ?Straight b.s.! Reverse the sides and Trayvon would of had a life sentence. Maybe death sentence.? Bush deleted the second half of that tweet later Sunday.

(AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. A jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder late Saturday night and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom may be limited.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Demonstrators upset with the verdict protested mostly peacefully in Florida, Milwaukee, Washington, Atlanta and other cities overnight and into the early morning Sunday, but some broke windows and vandalized a police squad car in Oakland during protests in four California cities, authorities said. Additional demonstrations were scheduled across the country through Sunday evening.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters nationwide lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford as it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, said Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

Jurors were sequestered during the trial, and they deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict. The court did not release the racial and ethnic makeup of the jury, but the panel appeared to reporters covering selection to be made up of five white women and a sixth who may be Hispanic.

In August 2012, defense attorney Mark O'Mara said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living like hermits and weren't working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching reacted strongly when the verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when it was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking toward the courthouse.

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

Protesters had taken to the streets late Saturday and into Sunday morning in Florida and other states, largely heeding the advice of officials and others who urged them not to resort to violence.

Authorities said in California media reports that some marchers in Oakland vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block some demonstrators there. TV news helicopter footage showed some people trying to start fires in the street and spray painting anti-police graffiti. The demonstration followed a raucous but largely peaceful protest in San Francisco and another in Los Angeles. An Oakland police dispatch said about 100 people protested there but gave no word of any arrests

Celebrities also reacted. Beyonce called at a Nashville concert for a moment of silence for Martin. Rapper Young Jeezy released a song in Martin's memory and Russell Simmons called for peace.

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started a petition calling for the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman. "The most fundamental of civil rights ? the right to life ? was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Jealous wrote in the petition, posted on the website MoveOn.org and addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, Crump said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, said Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him as a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. President Barack Obama also had weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

Travis sedated, in critical condition after surgery

Grammy-winning country music singer Randy Travis is still in critical condition following emergency surgery earlier this week, after suffering a stroke in a Texas hospital, his spokesman said on Friday.

"Mr. Randy Travis has been under heavy sedation since he came out of surgery late Wednesday night, July 10th, and is resting comfortably. He is still in critical condition," Travis' publicist Kirt Webster said in a statement.

Travis, 54, underwent a procedure to relieve pressure on the brain at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, located north of Dallas, on Wednesday. He had been admitted to hospital last week for a heart condition caused by a virus.

A six-time Grammy award winner known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses," Travis has received an outpouring of support from country music stars and his fans.

Webster said Travis' family continued to ask for prayers and support as he recovers.

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

The iPad offerings were all over the place, jumping from intensive weather details to a news-reading puppy to enough emoji to ensure that you never have to use words for feelings ever again. But then again, that?s what life is all about, after all?anthropomorphised dogs and avoiding face-to-face human interactions at all costs. Or something like that.

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

WunderMap: The Weather Underground, the very first online weather service (we think) has finally come to iPad. You?ll get everything you?ve come to love about the service including viewing weather station webcams and get down to as many levels of detail as you want by choosing various map layers for satellite, radar, and weather station readings. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

GroupMe: GroupMe?s a lifechanger. You should use it. This week it got emoji (good) that for some insane reason use its logo in place of a human head, and then attach things like beards and devil horns and headphones to it (uhh). The emoji update is just on iOS (iPhone and iPad), but will be on Android and Windows Phone 8 ?soon?. [Free]

iPad Apps of the Week: Guide, WunderMap, and More

Guide: A news app for the reading disinclined, Guide is essentially an RSS that talks to you. You choose which topics pique your interest, and the app then takes you to news pieces you might find interesting. At that point, though, is when an adorable virtual puppy takes over and reads until he can?t read no more (or until you tell it to stop). You can even add your own sources that the app might not already have pre-loaded. At the very least, it?s a fun way of staying up-to-date when your eyes have to be busy elsewhere. [Free]

2 killed, suspect arrested at SF shopping center

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Two women were killed and a man was wounded on Friday before a suspect covered in blood was arrested at a shopping center in a crowded San Francisco neighborhood that is home to police headquarters and several tech companies, authorities said.

Investigators were trying to determine if the shooting was connected to a botched robbery.

Responding officers encountered the suspect outside the San Francisco Giftcenter & Jewelrymart in the trendy South of Market area. At first they were not sure if the man, who had blood on his clothes, was a shooting victim or a suspect, police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The man, whose name was not released, opened fire at officers while retreating into a restaurant, Suhr said. The man kept shooting until he apparently ran out of ammunition and surrendered, Suhr said.

Officers did not return fire because the sidewalks were crowded with shoppers and residents.

The suspect was treated at a hospital for unknown injuries.

SWAT officers swept the building, but police said there were no outstanding suspects.

"We believe from video in an adjacent store that there was one suspect. We believe that it is the suspect we have in custody," Suhr said.

The man arrested had been in that area before, according to witnesses.

After the arrest, officers went inside the shopping center and found the two women dead in the lobby. Their names were not immediately available. A witness said at least one of the women worked at a jewelry store inside the building.

Another man with unknown injuries was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The shopping center is just blocks from the Hall of Justice, which is the home of San Francisco Superior Court, a jail and police headquarters. Several tech companies, including online game maker Zynga, are also in the neighborhood.

Officers were interviewing witnesses who ducked for cover when the shooting began.

"Somebody was crying or yelling for help. Then I saw the SWAT. There was a dozen of them. They told us to lock ourselves in," Veronica Sirois, who was shopping at the gift center, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I saw blood on the way out and a pair of bodies."

Plans to create 5000 jobs in oil and gas industry in Highlands

Thousands of jobs could be created in the Highlands after plans were unveiled to create an energy hub for the oil and gas industry.

Energy minister Fergus Ewing said the facility in Inverness would enable the region to benefit from Aberdeen's status as the oil capital of Europe.

Mr Ewing chaired a meeting to look at ways of attracting investment north and plugging the skills gap, with the goal of creating 5000 jobs.

The North Oil and Gas Steering Group will invite industry leaders to work with education and public agencies to help exploit the region's potential.

Mr Ewing said: "Nigg have had terrific success and they've got a floating production vessel there as we speak, which is excellent news.

"We''ve got North Highland College, a centre of excellence in engineering, we've got a lot of activity in Wick and in Tain and here in Invernes and many other parts of the Highlands and Islands.

"We want all local authorities to play a part in the work going forward and I see great opportunities for young people to have a smashing career in oil and gas."

City champ keeps it loose on golf course

? Amber Sieber has had quite a few people calling her choice words lately: Defending champion.

?Everybody is saying, ?Oh, you are the defending champion.? I?ve heard it like 100 times this week. Is it that big a deal??

Yes, it is.

Especially when they?re talking about the Fort Wayne Women?s Golf Association City Tournament, which has been run since Hillis Snyder won the first one in 1931.

And Sieber, 34, has never held this title before.

After years of trying, she won last year at Brookwood Golf Club by shooting a three-day total of 5-under 214 and defeating four-time champion Michelle Smith on the first playoff hole.

Cue the goings on this week, when friends, family, people at church, even those on the course at Coyote Creek Golf Club ? site of this year?s tournament ? made sure that Sieber knew this is a whole different ballgame this year.

But Sieber is easygoing about golf; she is much more concerned with taking care of her kids than worrying about the amount of draw on her irons.

Which isn?t to say she doesn?t practice; recently, while on a family trip to catch walleye in Minnesota, she snuck in some golf.

It?s just that she?s a different kind of player than when she played at Ohio State. She doesn?t take it too seriously and she goes for the gusto instead of playing it safe.

?My dad starts to giggle when I talk about not playing for three weeks and still shooting 3 under,? Sieber said. ?He says, ?I can?t believe it. I just don?t understand.? But when I get out there, it?s my one chance and there?s no pressure.

?I play a lot more fearlessly now and whereas, years ago, I?d think that I?d better lay with my 5-iron, now I just swing my driver and go for it.?

Coyote Creek can be a much more treacherous course than Brookwood, which had played host to the past several City Tournaments, and Sieber is glad for the change.

?I love that it?s at a new course,? she said. ?The reason why is that it will bring out the real talent. That?s what I think. When you play the same course all the time, you start knowing where your shots have to go, where to lay it up, and where you need to be to shoot for the pins. This will be different.?

Smith will try to join Pat Wright, Jean Saint, Pat McGary and Helen Greiner as the only players with five or more titles. Other contenders this year include Ashton Taft, Lakin Davis, Lori Stinson, Hilary Bowman, Sarah Dusman, Karley Dobis, Lauren Gant, Michelle Gerbasich, Katie Giant and Allison Curtis.

?Coyote Creek is definitely challenging,? Sieber said. ?It makes me really excited, and I?m anticipating the day.?

Google expected to spend $500 million marketing the Moto X in US and Europe

Motorola

New Motorola flagship to be available on all major carriers at launch

We may not have many details on the handset itself, but rumor has it that Google is ready to put $500 million behind marketing the upcoming Moto X. According to sources of The Wall Street Journal, Motorola has the go-ahead from Google to spend several hundred million dollars promoting the new handset both in the U.S and Europe. Sources say that it will also be priced competitively to current high-end handsets -- $199 on-contract and $599 off-contract -- and will make its way to all four major carriers this Fall.

Not much new about the Moto X is being revealed at this point that was not already known, but the WSJ claims that Motorola has succeeded in seriously reducing the amount of pre-installed bloatware on the device across carriers, which is a huge plus if it turns out to be the case. Sources indicate that morale at Google is high about the potential success of the Moto X, and we're certain that those of us in the Android crowd are looking forward to the launch of the device as well.

Bluetooth Low Energy coming to select Nokia Lumias via software update

Bluetooth 40 coming to select Lumias in upcoming Amber update, says Nokia Hong Kong

It looks like some of Nokia's Windows Phones have a notable change in store. At a gathering in Hong Kong, as reported by BlogJack, the company said that Bluetooth LE support (part of the 4.0 standard) will come to the Lumia 520, 620 and 720. Strangely absent from that list are the Lumia 820, 920 and the 925 -- all of which are powered by Qualcomm chips that support BT 4.0 at the hardware level. We're also not entirely sure if this update is a part of a more mature Windows Phone release that Microsoft plans on pushing out later this year or whether it's specific to the "Amber" refresh that's tailored to Lumia devices. We've asked Nokia for further details, and we also plan on getting some face-to-face time at its unveiling of a whole new Lumia this Thursday.

Agent says 3 teams interested in 41-year-old Jagr

Jaromir Jagr's agent says three teams are "very interested" in his 41-year-old client.

Petr Svoboda, though, told The Associated Press on Saturday he expects it to take some time for the NHL's active scoring leader to sign a contract.

Jagr might have company waiting for a new job.

J.P. Barry, who represents two of the top free agents available, Daniel Cleary and Mason Raymond, says he thinks decision-makers are taking a breath after a frenzy of activity Friday.

Day 1 of the free agency flurry included Jarome Iginla signing a one-year deal worth as much as $6 million with Boston, which almost acquired him last season from Calgary. Nathan Horton cashed in on his postseason performance for the Eastern Conference champions Bruins with a $37.1 million, seven-year contract in Columbus.

Will the iPhone get its own Mac Pro moment?

There?s no argument that the Mac Pro was in need of some love and in fact, we?d argue that it?s been overdue some attention for quite some time now. We?d hoped that Apple would offer some signs that the Mac Pro was still in their hearts at this year?s WWDC, but we never invisaged something like what Phil Schiller finally announced on-stage. It was a wow moment the likes of which we don?t recall since the original iPhone introduction.

    Which got us thinking.

With iPhones being released each year, and with leaks almost commonplace when it comes to Apple?s suppliers, are we in danger of growing bored with Apple?s iPhone? Perhaps more accurately, are we no longer capable of being surprised by a newly announced smartphone from Apple?

Or, as the title asks, will the iPhone get its own ?Mac Pro moment? soon?

When Apple announced the newly redesigned Mac Pro during its opening WWDC keynote, a rare thing happened. Apple was announcing a product refresh, and a major one at that, that none of us saw coming. Yes, a new Mac Pro had been semi-expected at each Apple event for some time, but what we got at WWDC was certainly not what most of us could dare dream of. The new Mac Pro pushes boundaries and changes the way we think about the product. With each iPhone, Apple tweaks and itterates, but is it still capable of taking a device that is undoubtedly hugely popular and completely redesigning it from top to bottom?

It is, of course, debateable whether it needs to. After all, if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it. But a product can grow stale long before it breaks, and while the iPhone 5 is certainly a gorgeous piece of kit, will the next iPhone offer the leap in quality and design that we saw when moving from the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4?

Since that time Apple has lost its leader and gone through plenty of changes inside the company. It?s been accused of losing focus and being unable to innovate anymore ? both accusations that clearly hurt Apple, as witnessed by the way Phil Schiller announced the new Mac Pro a few weeks ago. If Apple?s new powerhouse desktop machine can be stripped down and rebuilt from the bottom-up, can the iPhone also be rethought?

We?re obviously asking more questions than we are answering here, and with good reason. Apple as it is today is something of an unknown quantity. Just as we come to terms with Steve Jobs? passing and the crowning of Tim Cook as the new king, we?re now in the midst of changes inside the iOS team with Scott Forstall?s departure. We?ve already seen the first results of that change with iOS 7, but the night is still young and more changes are no doubt afoot. We find ourselves wondering what else Jony Ive has free reign over now that Forstall is no longer around.

These are interesting times for Apple and the iPhone, and with competition constantly improving, we can?t help but wonder whether Apple has the stomach for the fight.

If the Mac Pro?s any indication though, we might just be OK.

Eva Longoria dating 'Ready for Love' bachelor

"Ready for Love" producer Eva Longoria has confirmed she's dating contestant Ernesto Arguello.

"Ready for Love" may have lasted only two episodes, but producer Eva Longoria is hoping her romance with one of the men from the show will endure a lot longer.

Longoria recently confirmed to People magazine that she's dating entrepreneur Ernesto Arguello, one of three bachelors who went looking for love on the reality show.

The show featured three men -- Arguello, hospital CEO Ben Patton and Plain White T's band member Tim Lopez -- looking for love among 12 bachelorettes chosen especially for them by three professional matchmakers.

"Ready for Love" ended with Arguello choosing Shandi Finnessy, a former Miss USA, but, like the show itself, their relationship was short lived.

Longoria credits the media with helping to nudge her into a relationship with Arguello.

"I think that's why our relationship is so special ? we truly started as friends," Longoria told People. "I guess we have the press to thank for pushing us to see something we didn't see!"

Longoria's relationship with Arguello may not be the only one to come out of the reality matchmaking show. While the relationship between Patton and Angela Zatopek, who became engaged on the show, didn't work out, another one of the show's romances is still going strong. Lopez is still dating his pick, Jenna Reeves, and recently released a song on iTunes that he wrote for his reality TV love.

(AP Photo/Zach Reister)

(AP) ? When a July Fourth fireworks display exploded and sent red and white bursts into spectators at a Southern California park, Paulina Mulkern saw shrapnel headed straight for her 4-year-old cousin.

Mulkern pushed the girl under a lawn chair, and then shielded her 7-year-old cousin with her body as scorching debris flew overhead.

"You feel the big old heat come right over your back," she said Friday, still shaking as she recounted the explosion the night before that left her hospitalized with bruises and red marks on her back.

At least 36 people were injured as many in the crowd of thousands fled for safety. The victims, from 17 months to 78 years old, had burns and shrapnel wounds, and some were trampled, authorities and hospital officials said. The injured included 12 children.

Mulkern said she went into shock after being hit by a flying piece of debris, trembling badly as she was carried to a road where rescuers stripped off most of her clothes and wrapped her in a blanket.

"I was really terrified. Every time someone launched a firework it got me into panic mode and they just told me, ignore the sounds around you and concentrate on your breathing," she recalled.

Police in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, said it appeared a firework exploded prematurely in its mortar, knocking over others and aiming them across the field. Fire investigators, however, said later they had not yet determined a cause.

Police based their initial statement on the accounts of witnesses, who said a rack of fireworks fell over, said Ventura County Fire Capt. Mike Lindberry.

Among other key questions investigators were trying to answer was whether the pyrotechnics display was set far enough away from spectators, and even if all the rules were followed, whether those guidelines needed to be revised so that the public is kept farther back from launch sites.

Regulations require crowds be kept 70 feet away for every inch of diameter of the largest shell.

By those standards, spectators should have been at least 350 feet away from the show put on by Bethpage, N.Y.-based Bay Fireworks, said Ventura County Fire Department Deputy Chief Mike LaPlant. The distance of spectators from the show will be one of many factors considered by investigators.

"The distances were either at or beyond the normal distances, the prescribed distances, for that sized shell," he said.

The company said it regretted that spectators were injured and that it planned to publicly release the results of a thorough investigation.

Of the victims, almost all had been treated and released by late Friday, hospital officials said.

One patient was transferred to a burn center and two other adults remained hospitalized in fair condition, said Kim Milstein, chief executive of Simi Valley Hospital.

Although fireworks accidents at professional shows are rare, they are not unheard of. The blast in Simi Valley was itself among several mishaps nationwide Thursday, including errant explosions injuring workers at shows in nearby Ojai, as well as North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and a fireworks barge that caught fire in a Montana lake at the start of the grand finale.

In 2008, fireworks shells exploded on the ground and another one launched into the crowd, injuring five people at an event that also involved Bay Fireworks, said Julie L. Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, a fireworks trade group. The accident will undoubtedly prompt members of the National Fire Protection Association, which develops the codes that guide the industry, to evaluate whether changes are needed, she added.

"For spectators, this is incredibly rare," Heckman said. "This is just one that is going to stop everybody in their tracks and say, 'We've got to the figure out what happened.'"

Bay Fireworks is licensed by the state and had no violations on their record and the show did not require a state fire marshal permit, said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The state could cite the company after reviewing the results of the investigation by Ventura County, which issued the permit for the event.

Cellphone videos captured a frantic scene in Simi Valley. Fireworks exploded in spheres of sparks close to the ground, and smoke enveloped the park grounds. People screamed and ran as one man could be heard mistakenly shouting that someone was shooting.

Colette Schmidt was watching with guests at her home across the street when it became clear something went terribly wrong. After a few fireworks lofted perfectly in the sky, there was a big explosion on the ground and a volley of blasts.

One landed and left a crater across from her home, then bounced twice and shot over nearby trees, exploding in a puff of reddish-purple smoke, said Schmidt's daughter, Alessi Smith.

The family herded their guests inside and drew the blinds as sparks and embers rained down. "It was terrible but we were so blessed because we had 150 people here and not one single spark hit our house," she said.

A bomb squad was sent to the park to help deactivate the remaining 60 percent of fireworks that weren't launched.

On Friday morning, blackened debris from the explosion littered the ground. Huge chunks of shrapnel were still scattered across the park and the boxes the mortars had been sitting in were left in the middle of a green field.

Authorities said investigators planned to examine the debris and fly over the scene to photograph it.

The annual July Fourth celebration has been sponsored by the city and the local Rotary Club since 1970.

The mishap came a year after a fireworks show in San Diego exploded in about 20 seconds and sent multiple bulb-shaped explosions over the bay because of an error in the computer system that sets off the pyrotechnics. No one was injured. That show was not produced by Bay Fireworks.

Heckman, with the fireworks trade group, said that while the investigation has not yet revealed the cause of the Simi Valley blast, she believes it was probably a product malfunction.

The industry takes such incidents seriously, especially when they involve spectators. She noted that Bay Fireworks has been in business for a long time and has done significant productions.

The company website says it has produced events for NASA, Walt Disney World and Legoland.

"This incident is a dark cloud over the entire industry," she said. "We don't take it lightly."

Formality vs Informality in Today's Home - Nick Scali

Generations ago homes would often have a formal sitting room, parlour or drawing room where only the most honoured guests were entertained. For most of us over the years this has changed to a ?catch all? lounge or living room where we plant our televisions and spend a lot of our time. At Nick Scali Furniture, much of what we feature works perfectly in these settings.

However, with more and more people creating a ?home theatre? room, maybe it?s time to strike that more formal tone in our lounges again. What do you think?

Certainly we aren?t going to start bringing high arched-back, crushed red velvet settees back into our homes, but if you compare the variety of lounges featured in Nick Scali showrooms, you?ll find some that help you create an air of informality, while others ?step it up? a little. Let?s consider the feel of furniture in two ways: what would be ideal for a home theatre setting and what would we prefer when entertaining important guests.

Starting with a lounge like the Dominic (in white) from the Nick Scali Furniture catalogue, it?s easy to see that it would fit better into a lounge for entertaining rather than an informal family home theatre. It is absolutely comfortable enough for either room, but with the heavy traffic from kids in a home theatre, its beautiful white colour might not be the best choice.

    Coffee table pairing

But just as you bring out the best dinnerware when you entertain important guests, they would also feel honoured sitting on a beautiful leather lounge like the Dominic. Of course, you?ll want to pair it up with a coffee table that delivers an equally sleek and modern look. Nick Scali offers many that would work. Echoing the white of the lounge would be a good idea, so a table like the Studio would be an excellent choice.

Looking at furniture from the other side, in the home theatre room, you?re going to want the accent to be placed on ?inviting comfort.? Probably the most extreme example of this would be seating with builtin recliners. They would not be a ?first choice? for your formal lounge, but would be perfect for a home theatre setting.

    Recliners

Today Nick Scali Furniture carries recliners in both separate chair and sofa configurations. You could easily furnish a home theatre setting entirely with recliner seating, giving everyone the perfect perch from which to enjoy a long movie.

The home theatre room would also be a better location for a Nick Scali home entertainment unit with ample shelving. In the formal lounge such a unit would be more out of place. When it?s important that the ?focus? be on your guests, having a television in the room can be a major distraction.

If you have the opportunity to create separate lounge and home theatre rooms, give some thought to making your lounge a very special area that will really ?wow? your guests.

Debunking the myths: 3 false claims about immigration reform

Many critics of immigration reform claim that opening up pathways for immigrants is unnecessary, will strain an already overburdened government, and take jobs away from native-born Americans. Reich tackles all three 'economic myths.'

    By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / July 2, 2013

Immigrant students join a coalition of immigrant rights supporters on a 24-hour vigil calling on the U.S. Congress to pass immigration reform outside the Federal Building in Los Angeles, Calif. in June 2013. Immigration reform will not hurt Americans or take jobs away from them, Reich argues.

The battle over immigration reform is often about economic fear ? fear that immigrants are hurting the economy for native born Americans. ?But that fear is based on several economic myths:

MYTH ONE:?Immigration reform will strain already overburdened government safety net programs like Social Security and Medicare.

    Wrong. ?

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finds that immigration reform will actually reduce the budget deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars.

Why is that? Because while they seek citizenship, undocumented workers will be required to pay into Social Security and Medicare even though they won?t be eligible for them.

They?re also younger on average than the typical worker, so even when they?re citizens they?ll be paying into Social Security and Medicare far longer.

MYTH TWO: New immigrants take away jobs from native-born Americans.?

    Wrong again.?

The economy doesn?t contain a fixed number of jobs to be divided up among people who need them. As an economy grows, it creates more jobs. And what we?ve seen over the last 200 years is that new immigrants to America fuel that growth, and thereby create more jobs for everyone.?

We?ve also learned that new immigrants are by definition ambitious. They wouldn?t have borne all the risks and hardships of immigrating to the United States if they weren?t. And that ambition and hard work help the economy grow even faster.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that immigration reform will increase economic growth by more than 3 percent 10 years from now, 5 percent in 20 years.

Ambition also helps explain why the children of new immigrants earn more college degrees, on average, than the children of native-born.

And why their incomes are higher than their parent?s incomes.

All of which also helps grow the economy and create more jobs.?

MYTH THREE:?We don?t need new immigrants.

    Wrong again.

The American population is aging rapidly. Forty years ago there were five workers for every retiree. Now there are three. If present trends continue, there will be only two workers for every retiree by the year 2030.

No economy can survive on a ratio of 2 workers per retiree.

But because new immigrants are on average younger than native-born Americans, they?ll help bring that ratio back down. They?re needed so we can continue to have a vibrant economy.

Get it? Three wrongs don?t make a right. The right answer is immigration reform is not only good for undocumented workers. It?s also good for the rest of us.?
